After installing refcontrol and restarting firefox, navigate to a mf link and select "tools"/"refcontrol option..." from the menu.

Set the options as shown here, click ok and you should be able to successfully load any valid mf link. Worth doing this for all file hosts as it will prevent them being alerted to links being clicked on vef and other sites they might be looking out for.
