With the PlayStation Vita's release date set as December 17 in Japan, Sony has issued a press release detailing many of the system's features, accessories, and other noteworthy tidbits. Battery life in particular has caused somewhat of an outcry, although the fairly low figures were to be expected.

The release estimates approximate gaming time on Vita to be between 3 and 5 hours; watching videos will get you about 5 hours; and listening to music in standby mode will go for about 9 hours. It's important to note these figures are based on the screen brightness being at the default setting with headphones plugged in and Bluetooth off. The game-playing figure is for when you're not playing online; 3G or Wi-Fi usage could drag any of these figures down even further.

Fortunately, it's estimated that it will only take 2 hours and 40 minutes to fully charge from an empty battery with an AC adapter. I say "fortunately" because that's almost an hour better than the 3DS, which takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes to fully charge. That system is often criticized for its battery; it, too, provides only about 3-5 hours of gameplay. There have been third-party solutions, but Nintendo attempted to mitigate the problem by including a charging cradle -- something you'll have to pay extra for with Vita.

The Vita battery life news shouldn't come as any sort of shock. Back in January, when the system was still called the NGP, we asked Sony's head of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida about the subject of battery life. He answered, "It'll be about the same as the original PSP." In other words: You won't be playing games for more than a few hours without a charge.

What some will definitely find upsetting about the contents of the Sony press release is the pricing of its proprietary memory cards. Internal storage seems to have been sacrificed in order to keep the system's price as low as it is, making the memory cards more necessary. There are four different memory card sizes planned for release in Japan on December 17 alongside the system: 4GB (2,200 yen, about $29), 8GB (3,200 yen, $42), 16GB (5,500 yen, $72), and 32GB (9,500 yen, $124). Those seem incredibly expensive, and it immediately makes the prospect of using the system for all digital games -- Sony has said more than once that all Vita games will be downloadable -- much less attractive.

"Some PS Vita software titles may require the use of separately sold memory card for saving game's saved data while some software titles are capable of saving it on to the PS Vita card itself," a section of the release notes. "Please refer to the PS Vita game packages or game manuals for further details."

While one would expect third-party accessory makers will release their own memory cards at more competitive prices than what Sony has on offer, some people might be hesitant to trust their save data on an unofficial memory card.

The 3DS doesn't rely as heavily on downloadable games as Vita (which has access to hundreds of PSP games available on the PlayStation Store, in addition to Vita content), yet it uses the more inexpensive option in SD cards, and it comes with a 2GB card with the system. A SanDisk 32GB SD card can be had for less than $45 on Amazon right now; the $124 you'd spend on an equivalent Vita memory card could get you a 64GB SD card.

You can check out the list of upcoming accessories and prices for yourself here. Those on there include the aforementioned charging cradle (2,800 yen, $36), a USB cable (1,300 yen, $17; one comes with the system), a protective film (800 yen, $10), a case (1,800 yen, $23), and more. Both a car adapter and portable charger are planned for release next spring, though neither has a price assigned to it yet.

Further Details on Vita's Capabilities Revealed

Speaking with Impress Watch, Sony Computer Entertainment development head Yoshio Matsumoto discussed some of the technical details of PlayStation Vita, its media formats and what it was capable of.

Vita is apparently a device designed with multitasking in mind. Games and system applications are kept in separate "spaces" in the system's memory, allowing applications to run alongside games. This means that Twitter clients, Sony's location-based social network Near and the system's web browser will be able to run in the background while a game is being played -- a portable equivalent of Steam's overlay facility, in some ways. Game operations are always given priority, however, so there shouldn't be any performance issues as are sometimes seen on iOS and Android devices when too many apps have been left open.

The web browser for the device is based on WebKit, which powers Chrome, Safari and the browsers on both iOS and Android devices. Matsumoto would not be drawn on the question of whether or not the device would support Flash, giving only a "no comment" in response.

It'll be possible for players to use the Remote Play facility on Vita to watch recorded videos from the "Torne" DVR and TV tuner accessory available in Japan. It's not yet known whether this will also support the similar European PlayTV system.

Privacy functions on the system will include game-specific settings, allowing players to not broadcast the fact you're playing certain games to your friends lists -- perfect for that collection of dating sims that you're slightly ashamed of. Players will also be able to switch the location-based Near facility on and off if they don't want to be found, or privacy settings can simply be customized to limit the availability of user information as desired.

Vita will use its own proprietary form of memory card for storage. The reason for this rather than, say, Sony's own Memory Stick format or SD cards is apparently due to "security concerns." Unlike the PSP, owning one of these won't be essential as Vita's game cards will allow saving directly to them -- however, if players want to download software from the PlayStation Store or use their Vita as a media player, they'll need to purchase some storage.

3G plans for the Vita in the U.S. haven't yet been announced, but Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo has revealed its options. One of these is a 103 hour plan for ¥4,980. 100 of these 103 hours can be used for 128Kbps 3G data transfer, but the remaining 3 can be used for high speed HSDPA 3G access at 14Mbps. Users can freely switch between the two transfer speeds as they please, but the 103 hours must be used within 180 days of purchase. The alternative is 20 hours of access for ¥980, which must be used within 30 days.

All this cool stuff comes at a price, however, as we discovered the other day -- Vita's battery life is rather short in comparison to other portable devices. Will that become a dealbreaker, or just something users will learn to live with?

Tuesday during the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton said that the PlayStation Vita handheld gaming unit will finally arrive in the United States, Canada, Latin America, and Europe on February 22, 2012. The vanila Wi-Fi version will cost a hefty $249 USD whereas the Wi-Fi/3G combo model will be a dollar shy of a full $300 USD.

"Our first-party studios and army of publishing partners have been extremely hard at work to ensure that PS Vita launches with a vast library of titles that deliver unique gameplay experiences that go beyond any handheld or mobile device on the market," Tretton said Tuesday in a blog. "We have more than 100 games currently in development globally that span many different genres, including Sound Shapes, Resistance: Burning Skies, Uncharted Golden Abyss, Capcom’s Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed, EA Sports’ FIFA, Activision’s Call of Duty, and numerous others that you’ll hear about in the months ahead."

As previously reported, the device will sport a 4-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU coupled with an SGX543MP4+ GPU. It will also have a 5-inch capacitive OLED multi-touch screen (960 x 544) and a multi-touch pad mounted on the back. Other features will include 512 MB of RAM, 128 MB of VRAM, a front-facing camera, a rear-facing camera, built-in GPS, a six-axis motion sensing system and more.

"With its vibrant 5-inch OLED screen, dual analog sticks, dual cameras, and front and rear touch panel, PS Vita will deliver rich, immersive games with stunning graphics, which simply can’t be found anywhere else," Tretton said. "Now you’ll be able to play shooters and action titles on-the-go with controls that are familiar, and you won’t have to block out the gorgeous screen to interact with the games."

Back in September, Sony said that as many as 500 to 600 PlayStation Portable games will be available to purchase and download to the device via the PlayStation Network. The company is also reportedly working on a solution for current customers to bring their UMD-based games to the new portable console (which Sony failed to do for the doomed PSPgo) using some kind of "special download plan." Sony said it will reveal more information on this at a later date although it's likely to happen in December when the console lands in Japan.

In addition to serving as a portable gaming console, the PS Vita will also support apps for Facebook, foursquare, Skype and Twitter. The applications will be downloadable to PS Vita directly from the PlayStation Store at no charge. Users will be able to activate the application just by selecting the icon which will appear on the PS Vita home screen.

"With PS Vita, you can enjoy the best handheld gaming experience available and stay connected to the people and interests you care about," Tretton said. "It’s never been a better time to be a part of PlayStation Nation and I can’t wait for you to experience this revolutionary handheld system. In related news, Irrational Games head Ken Levine reports that Bioshock Vita is still in its "paper stage" because the studio is still heavily wrapped up in Bioshock: Infinite. Levine said that the Vita game may be outsourced if push comes to shove, but finding the right studio will be difficult if that happens.

"To keep the quality level, I wish I could say it was easy, it just tends to be more time consuming," he said. "It's just hard to find the right partners or the right people to hire. I'd rather do something that's an experiment and that's a little different and is unique for the franchise."

The PlayStation Vita, Sony’s new handheld, has launched in Japan, but the new device apparently has some bugs. Sony released a statement Monday apologizing to customers for a lineup of launch issues.

Sony has acknowledged problems that include freezing screens, trouble with GPS and location data, the inability to hook up the Vita to the PlayStation Network and problems turning the device on.

The new device reportedly hasn’t managed to make the same foothold in the market as its competitor, the Nintendo 3DS. According to a report from the Japanese language research group famitsu.com, sales estimates for the PlayStation Vita at launch have been 321,407 units in its first weekend, nearly twice as much as the PSP’s sales on opening day. But that’s still low compared with the Nintendo 3DS, which sold 371,326 units in its opening weekend.

The Vita had a stronger list of titles at launch but still couldn’t eclipse the 3DS during the holiday season — a trend that could spell trouble for Sony if sales don’t grow.

Sony has put a lot on the line with its new handheld, particularly after the company’s public relations disaster with the PlayStation network earlier this year.

Nintendo and Sony face increasing competition from mobile gaming for handheld customers. Sony has managed to jump — perhaps belatedly — into the market by introducing the PlayStation-authorized Xperia Play smartphone and the Sony S Tablet, but a lot still rides on the Vita. With the company fighting off Microsoft for dominance in the console space, Sony needs the win in handhelds.

The Vita features a five-inch touchscreen, rear touchpad and front- and rear-facing cameras. It is scheduled to start selling in the United States on Feb. 22. The WiFi version will cost $250; adding 3G connectivity bumps the price up to $300.

Battery life is one of the great technological challenges: portable devices today sport some awesome capabilities, and this uses up juice big time.
Same goes for electric vehicles: if they are to replace the internal combustion engine, the batteries must be able to be charged rapidly, and give the same driving range as a full tank of petrol.

Back in 1991, I got my Sega Game Gear,, a great handheld gaming machine.

This device didn't have a rechargeable battery unit: you would have buy 6 regular alkaline batteries when the power run out.

The problem was that even using the best quality batteries (Duracel), would only give you about 4 hours of play time.

This meant that games such as Sonic The Hedgehog (that could not save their progress), could only be completed if you used the wired power adapter, so no good if used when traveling.

Progress has been made since then, but we still have a long way to go.

Handheld gaming device will be overtaken by smartphones, so I don't understand why sony invested in PSVita instead of developing its smartphones that are still inferior to HTC, Samsung and Apple ones.
