![]() Hello everyone,
Last edited by Mordach; 7th August 2014 at 01:29.
this is my first thread so i will try to do by best, because it's not my native language,so sorry about that. You will see in this thread my personnal experience with some explanation about how it works, why, how much it cost etc...I will provide you some links mainly via Wikipedia.(I will not talk about all what i've mentionned. You will see later why). PS:To the staff of Planetsuzy if my thread is in the wrong section,i'm sorry i have no idea where i can put it,so if i'm in the wrong section i'm very sorry. First thing first, you need to ask yourself "what i want to see in the sky",because each telescopes are different. Here some "objects" you can see: -Planets and moons (mainly in our Solar System) -Nebulas (cloud dust, this is where stars are made) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nebula -Stars (well you know stars) -Star cluster,Globular cluster etc... en.wikipedia.orgS/wiki/tar_cluster -Sun (yes the sun) -Galaxies For me it was for nebulas and deep field if you want to take a look, mine is a Celestron C6N-GT -celestron.com/browse-shop/uncategorized/c6-ngt-computerized-telescope The next important thing to know is,if you want to really purchase your first telescope DON'T buy it in the internet. You need to go in a specialized store first,so you can ask any question to these people and see what it is by your own.Oh! and forget Wal-Mart and others store like that, and false advertising like telescope magnification of 500X this is bull$%*@. Types of Telescope: -Newtonian en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newtonian_telescope -Catadioptric en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catadioptric -Refractor en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refractor -Dobsonian en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dobsonian -Solar en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_telescope You have more types but they are extremely expensive (Ritchey-Chrétien,Dall–Kirkham,Rowe-Ackermann Schmidt etc... the prices is between 4000$ to 60 000$ yes 60 000$)so i will not talk much about those. So for beginning and the price the Newtonian are probably the best. The Catadioptric are good too but you need more knowledge to work with it,these two type use mirrors instead of lenses like the refractor. What do you need? Well you need some accessories to begin...the basics like -Eyepieces (you have a lot of choices,brands,utilities...i will explain later); -Laser collimator (very important you need it to adjust mirrors); -Telrad (it's a reflex sight); -Filters (I will explain later); -Barlows lens (it give you a magnification of X2 and X3); -Power Tank(you will need this if you have like me a computerized telescope) Some useful links (i prefer to put links,it takes less place) Telrad:The Telrad purpose is to find a star and allign it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telrad#Telrad Laser collimator:The only purpose of this accessory is collimating the mirror and it's very important. collimator.com/ Barlow lens:A Barlow lens give your eyepiece a magnification of X2 and X3 so it's really useful because it gives you 2 or 3 others magnification with one eyepiece. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barlow_lens Eyepieces:You have a lot of brands (Televue,Baader Planetarium,Lunt...) and differents qualities etc..The most important things to know: An eyepieces gives you a bigger pictures, returned by the telescope. They are 3 sizes 24mm(0,965"),31.75mm(1,25"),50.8mm(2").The 24mm(0.965") are now obsolete. You need at least 2 eyepieces (magnification low and high),habitually you already have one when you buy a telescope, it's a cheap, low quality, made in China. It's better to pay a 200$ eyepiece than a 50$.(you want a clear picture right!) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eyepiece Filters:Like the eyepiece, but the purpose is for correcting the picture in your eyepiece using color wave (the eyes of a human cannot recognize color above a certain distance)The most useful filter is the light pollution filter (LPR) why? -it removes the sodium and the mercury; -block the natural light caused by the oxygen in our atmosphere; -the backround is more dark; -you can use it in urban area The other type of eyepieces are very important too,but i will talk about that later en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astronomical_filter Powertank:well it gives you POWER ![]() celestron.com/browse-shop/astronomy/accessories/other-accessories/powertank,-12v-power-supply So if you guys are intersted that i continue this topic, because i don't very know if some of you are intersted to buy a telescope i will continue, but with more details,prices/budget,brands etc...Feel free to ask me your question and feel free to comment about this thread,i'm a real newbie at it, and some tips would be greatly appreciate. So thank you if you read it without having a headache and sorry for my bad english, thank you and have a nice day! Best regards Mordach |

![]() I heard that if you use a really strong telescope and look directly at the sun that you die instantly. Is this true? And if so, has anyone ever done it?
Thanks. |

![]() Even though I'll never buy a telescope or get into astronomy in any form, I found that a very interesting read. It reminded me of one of the best birthday presents I ever got as a kid - a small telescope - just over 1ft long with a slightly tapered body and about 2 inches wide at the front - similar to a shooters spotting scope. I saw it in a local shop window about six months before my birthday and begged and begged my parents for it. I never thought they'd actually get it for me as it was quite expensive. But when the day came there it was - I nearly fainted with joy. I thought it was the bee's knees and spent a lot of time looking at the moon. Somewhere over the years it got lost - can't remember where or when, but I often wonder where it ended up. Personally I'd be very happy to see the thread expand and flourish. ![]() |

To be honest I would love to be able to afford a block of land out back away from the bright city lights and setup some kind of shed with a roof that rolls away for a big dobsonian telescope. The cruel irony to this is that by the time I could afford such a luxury my eye sight will not be as good as it is right now to enjoy all of the colour and detail a sixteen inch dob plus quality eye pieces could provide. I have had the pleasure of looking through some amazing telescopes the local astronomy clubs organise from time to time. |

Actually no,because the eye is only capable to see a certain wavelength of color ![]() If you take an astrophotography ccd camera with filters and lot of patience and software experience, you will see the color from the others galaxies, nebulas, planets etc...You cannot see the color without filters because of the nature of our vision and the distance of these objects.Later on this thread, if you guys want i can explain it how astrophotography work. Here some links about color wavelength; hubblesite.org/reference_desk/faq/all.php.cat=light allthesky.com/articles/imagecolor.html pha.jhu.edu/~kgb/cosspec/ And the top 10 things you might now about stars; earthsky.org/space/ten-things-you-may-not-know-about-stars# Best regards Mordach |
