Too bad. They were really good when I used them for both ups & downs. Will miss this service.

Whoa, looks like Broken took a major hit, as they were the only forum that i knew that used Toucan a lot. (At least that was the case two months ago.)
Someone needs to really challenge PayPal's monopoly on money transferring...

Not just Paypal, but other available paying options were explored and rejected -- they don't want to touch a "File Locker" right now. With no way to receive monies, with the continuing slow death of smaller hosts everywhere (i.e. those that can't afford lawyers and lobbyists), and being unable to compete with the cash whoring sites ... the Powers-that-be decided to end it now, while they are still paying for enough servers to allow users to get their files off/remoted somewhere.
Pretty damn cool actually -- other people would have just killed it and kept whatever money was left. Knowing the primary owner as I do, it wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that he was paying out of pocket just to give people a chance to recover their files. I'm sure the hordes of Cash Whores here are rubbing their hands together, anticipating trying to get their latest paying host on the "Allowed Hosts List" here at PS to replace. Quote:
I think the handful of us who used it in this forum also use other mirrors -- in my case I have everything up on good ol' RS -- so its not like it will cause a whole lot of posts to die. RF

I can't say I'll miss Toucan. I hated using them in the several times that I have.

Fortuitously my a/c died in June and I didn't renew as I had little to no connection where I was throughout Q2 this year.
However, I find it hard to criticise a host who closes as gracefully and fairly as Toucan are doing. Giving a month notice, during which time they operate fee free is a probably a first; to my knowledge at least, no other host has given a months opportunity to remote your uploads to another host in this way. I would be further surprised if any of the other hosts potentially in line for closure conduct themselves in such a well spirited manner when their time comes. |
