Hello.

I'm just wondering if anyone could suggest a good software that would convert mkv to mp4. Some mkv files I have are 5 to 10GB's, but I've seen the same files that are 1 to 3GB's (smaller resolution, but not an issue). Free or purchase is not a problem.

I have a program called PRISM which allows converting any video file into any other file. Typically, I convert .mkv, .avi, .mpg, .wmv and others into .mov or .mp4 files on my Mac. It works well.

Same company has another program that converts audio files called SWITCH. It also works very well.

mkv is a container, not a file type. You can have ANY video codec inside an mkv file.

You can use avidemux to do that, plus you can also manually use it to lower the biterate of the videos to shrink their size, lots of 1080p videos use 12kbps but I find 7.5k is usually enough, the processing time varies depends on the codec you choose, I often choose H265 for its high quality compression, just the processing time is a bit longer though, a 30-min video can take ~30 mins to "shrink".

If you have all the latest codecs installed on your machine, MPEG Streamclip will convert MKV to many other formats (including mp4).
