Facebook To Buy Oculus Rift For $2 Billion
Here's the press release:
Facebook today announced that it has reached a definitive agreement to acquire Oculus VR, Inc., the leader in immersive virtual reality technology, for a total of approximately $2 billion. This includes $400 million in cash and 23.1 million shares of Facebook common stock (valued at $1.6 billion based on the average closing price of the 20 trading days preceding March 21, 2014 of $69.35 per share). The agreement also provides for an additional $300 million earn-out in cash and stock based on the achievement of certain milestones. This must be the dumbest move facebook has ever done as this headsett will be mostly used for gaming like sony will have their own version doen the line for ps4. But who will use this clunky thing to go on facebook, this just shows facebook has to much money and they don't how to spend it. But it can be a nice way to watch porn without any1 notocing it |

While I agree on the dumbest move ever part, and while I'm no fan of FB, the thing is, it was the only one with enough guts to say publicly "HTML5 is not that great folks", while all the dinosaurs (google, MS, Apple) were hyping the shit out of it ... Oddly.
Because yeah, you can build games in HTML5/JS/CSS3... You can... But it's so fucked up if you don't use "photonstorm phaser" for instance, and the source code is only one click away... Not to mention that if you have noscript running it goes fubar And the fucking sound ... But I digress HTML5/JS/CSS3 is for web pages in the first place, and even for that, expect a lot of trouble (standardssssssssssssssssssssssssss) Same for the video, only flash is able to switch from low quality to HD at runtime Long story short, there are some brain cells still working at facebook and some guts too I don't know if it's hypocritical, but zukerberg did say publicly that his dear leader was not doing enough to protect people's privacy... Well, from faCIAbook, it's funny, but still, he did it, while the others shut the fuck up And I digress again The only way for the industry to get away from piracy, is hardware, new hardware Something rendering the flat screen obsolete, "forcing" people to buy the new equipments in order to use it, new kind of data storage, etc ... That's the only way IMHO I mean, you can download AfterBurnerII But you can't download THAT And trust me, the experience with the good old afterburnerII in that machine has nothing to do with the emulator experience So yeah, maybe it looks dumb now, but... I'm thinking about porn right now |

I still don't understand why they chose Facebook and not a different Tech giant. They could've gotten the money from almost literally anyone else. I'd be mad as hell if I was an original Kickstarter backer.

That's a good question

Why not google, apple, samsung, or whatever What's facebook ? A giant database of people, a big fat huge market for online games, that's basically what it is "But who will use this clunky thing to go on facebook" True, I don't see the direct connection between fb and this thing, casual games are not enough a justification The only thing that makes a bit of sense right now, is the fact that many people have complained about facebook being something full of shit with no intrinsic value when it entered the stock market, that's why shares collapsed few months later And I know there's still debates about it, with people arguing basically that FB business model is weak because there's nothing real behind it So, maybe, just maybe zucker just wants to add some real shit to his shit, either to pretend it's worth something or for real, to develop real products And maybe Oculus Rift is not that great, that would explain why the others dinosaurs haven't fought to death to own it Edit: Somekind of video conference, "augmented reality" style I think that's what they have in mind "watch all your friends for real in real time...And much, much, much moarrrr !" |
