I can understand why you might not think of Musk as an engineer . . . after all, he has degrees in physics and economics, not in engineering per se. However, there are many practicing engineers who never get formal degrees in engineering. Elon Musk was completely dependent on Tom Mueller, the real engineer at SpaceX. Musk took credit for Mueller's accomplishment, as Musk is prone to do.

Musk is a complete charlatan who has convinced a segment of the population that he is something that he is not.

If you can provide any concrete evidence for your claims, I'm all ears and would certainly be willing to revise my opinion. However, in light of what Isaacson wrote in his Musk biography (he basically shadowed Musk for two years, so he should know) as well as what I've gleaned elsewhere, it seems pretty incontrovertible that Musk qualifies as an engineer, both of software and aerospace. To be sure, Musk delegates a lot of the technical details to his engineering teams, but that really doesn't take away from his expertise and the importance of his oversight. It's obvious that a lot of people just hate Musk because of his abrasive personality, and that hatred blinds them to the brilliance of his accomplishments. If Tom Mueller were truly the brains behind Musk's success, why is Mueller only worth $70 million and Musk worth over $400 billion, on track to become the world's first trillionaire? Why did Mueller work for Musk for 20 years instead of going off on his own and starting his own aerospace company? Nothing against Mueller, of course, he's a great engineer, but if it weren't for Musk he'd probably still be designing home-made rockets in his garage as a hobby, as he was when Musk first recruited him.

Unlike Musk he has both a BS and MS in Engineering, he has worked in the field his entire career and has started his own company. BTW...A degree in engineering, as well as a professional license, are legal requirements in most states before you can call yourself an "Engineer"

I don't know Musk so I don't know where you get this notion that I hate him. However, I do think he is a poser and charlatan based on his past and current actions. As for your argument about net worth being a measure of a man, I will point out that Albert Einstein was no billionaire but no one doubts his contributions.

Walter Isaacson is generally considered one of the preeminent living biographers. In fact he's about as authoritative and respected a source as you'll find. He was surprised by how much Musk is a visual thinker who's constantly imagining how the physics of a design will work in a given scenario, and how he's concerned not just with the machine he's making, but with the machine that's making the machine. Well, I appreciate your effort to produce at least some evidence to back up your claims, although citing a Wikipedia article on Mueller that doesn't even touch on the subject in question -- namely, how much of a role Musk played in developing SpaceX rockets -- isn't exactly conversion-level proof. I'm obviously not saying the value of a person can be measured by their net worth. Even Musk himself has said that the only true wealth is time. I am saying, though, that if Mueller were as brilliant and instrumental to Musk's success as you suggest, he would have gone off and started his own company much earlier and earned a lot more money than he did, rather than just riding on Musk's coattails for 20 years -- just think, for example, of how quickly Gordon Moore left William Shockley's company to start Intel . . . or how Jobs quit Hewlett-Packard to start Apple.

What is that even supposed to mean? Musk has such a wide range of vocal fans, what you said makes no sense. Even on this site, I've seen no fewer than three people claim Musk isn't an engineer, when in fact even the harshest of Musk's real critics would concede that not only is he an engineer, but an ingenious engineer at that. When I hear patently untrue statements, especially about someone who's done so much good in the world like Musk has, it's hard to resist speaking up about what the actual facts of the case are. Certainly he's an imperfect human being (although so aren't other tech geniuses like Bezos, Zuckerberg, Gates, etc.) but the way he's poised to improve technology on so many fronts is virtually unprecedented. I feel as though, rather than having a reasonable debate here about the merits and flaws of Musk's philosophy, lately it's like explaining to a bunch of flat-Earthers that, despite all their biases, the Earth is actually round (well, an oblate spheroid to be precise). No matter how much people dislike Musk, though, that doesn't make him any less of a brilliant innovator, or somehow disqualify all the incredible work he's done.
