Obama mourns passing of Nimoy: 'I loved Spock'

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama said Friday that Leonard Nimoy, who made the sign for "Live long and prosper" famous around the world, achieved that goal during his 83 years on planet Earth.

The actor, who played Mr. Spock in the "Star Trek" TV series and films, died Friday at his Los Angeles home.

"I loved Spock," Obama said in a statement.

"Long before being nerdy was cool, there was Leonard Nimoy. Leonard was a lifelong lover of the arts and humanities, a supporter of the sciences, generous with his talent and his time. And of course, Leonard was Spock," Obama said. "Cool, logical, big-eared and level-headed, the center of Star Trek's optimistic, inclusive vision of humanity's future."

Obama added that he met Nimoy in 2007.

"It was only logical to greet him with the Vulcan salute, the universal sign for `Live long and prosper,'" the president said. "And after 83 years on this planet, and on his visits to many others, it's clear Leonard Nimoy did just that." The Vulcan salute is formed by spreading one's fingers into a "V."

Obama said he and first lady Michelle Obama join Nimoy's family, friends and countless fans in mourning his death.

On a side note, I just got the entire TOS on Blu-Ray today.

I've forgotten how good this show was considering the shoe string budget.

We didn't have Star Trek TOS on TV in Italy when we were there.

I didn't see my first episode of it until we came here in 1977.

I still remember my brother and I thought the show was boring (since we were into Star Wars) and what was the deal with the pointed ear guy and where were the space battles action? All they do is talk talk talk!!

The show finally grew on me when I re-discovered again on syndicated re-run in the early 80's after ST TMP became a box office success but I think I may have missed some episodes.

Back then we had no internet and we had no way of knowing how complete the syndicated broadcast on our local channel (which later became WB) was.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Nichelle Nichols, who played Lt. Nyota Uhura in the original "Star Trek" TV series and in subsequent films, is recovering from a stroke suffered Wednesday at her Los Angeles home.

Tests indicate the stroke was mild, her booking manager, Zachery McGinnis, said Friday. He said the 82-year-old actress began therapy Friday.

"She is awake, eating, in good spirits and able to have full conversations," McGinnis said.

Nichols' role on "Star Trek" earned her accolades for breaking stereotypes for black actresses. The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. personally encouraged her to stay with the series. She also appeared in six big-screen spinoffs starting in 1979 with "Star Trek: The Motion Picture."

Her acting career has continued with roles in two upcoming films.

Saw her up close once in Toronto around the 20th anniversary of Star Trek's premiere. Hoping for all the best but even heroes pass... into legend.

When shooting the original series the lighting was off and the cinema-photographer started yelling without thought to color (lol), "She's black! She's black!" and then immediately shut-up in embarrassment.
Her reply?
"But comely."

Anton Yelchin, a charismatic and rising actor best known for playing Chekov in the new "Star Trek" films, has died at the age of 27. He was killed in a freak accident at his Studio City home early Sunday morning, his publicist, Jennifer Allen, confirmed.

Yelchin's friends reported to his house in the 3800 block of Berry Drive at about 1 a.m. Sunday when he failed to show up for a rehearsal meeting. Authorities from the LAPD Valley Traffic Division said he was pinned between a car and a mailbox pillar in his driveway.

The actor's car was in neutral and running when it appeared to have gone down the bottom of the steep driveway, killing Yelchin, authorities said.

Police said no foul play was suspected, and it was unknown whether drugs or alcohol were involved.

Yelchin started small with roles in indie films and various television shows, before breaking out in films like the crime thriller "Alpha Dog" and the teenage comedy "Charlie Bartlett." His biggest role to date has been in the rebooted "Star Trek" films - the third of which, "Star Trek Beyond" comes out in July.

The official "Star Trek" Twitter page posted the news saying "We're saddened to report the passing of Anton Yelchin, best known as Chekov."


Actor Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock in the reboot, posted a tribute on Instagram of his friend and colleague.

The post read: "Our dear friend. Our comrade. Our Anton. One of the most open and intellectually curious people I have ever had the pleasure to know. So enormously talented and generous of heart. Wise beyond his years. And gone before his time. All love and strength to his family at this impossible time of grief."

Yelchin, an only child, was born in Russia. His parents were professional figure skaters who moved the family to the United States when Yelchin was a baby. Yelchin's family requests privacy at this time.

This is really sad and unfortunate news, i personally liked his movies, especially his role in Star Trek and thought he did a great job in the remake of Fright Night, seemed like a cool guy, yet another star has gone too soon....R.I.P. _ Anton.

One of the best moments of the new reboot is Chekov running down the corridor screaming, "I can do this! I can do this!"

I use that at work myself, without the running and screaming, but enough to give the manager bastards the idea.

What a terrible way to die couldn't he have stopped the car and pull the hand break considering it was a steep driveway? Jeez man, that's so messed up
