For individual screen caps VLC (freeware) but for contact sheets Video ThumbnailsMaker by Scorp (shareware).

I concur Dr. Gemini
 I use VLC if I just need a couple of screenshots. I haven't made a thumbsheet in a while so I don't know what's out there that is superior. I used ImageGrabber II but there were files that didn't work well with it.

you can make batch screen caps with vlc this site tells you how

I see that no one mentioned Thumbnailme! It's free / open source software that can do batch videos thumbnails or screens with lots of options & features
