Hosts use captchas to...
1 Keep robots at bay
2 Encourage people to sign up to them 3 Piss us off and waste our time Some of the captchas are getting harder and harder to enter. I wish they were all like Rapidgators - nice and easy. Or, better still like HotFiles - non existant!

Let's weigh our options, shall we?
Keep Robots at Bay This is the common excuse, and it's a known fact that the only purpose for captchas existing in the first place is to verify that users are human. It makes sense for registration on forums, but it doesn't make sense for simply downloading files. This couldn't be the reason. Encourage people to sign up to them A more likely scenario, but even a child knows that signing up for a free account won't disable captchas. Only premium will. People will pay for premium for the stupidest reasons imaginable, but I don't think filling out captchas is one of those reasons. It's usually the wait times that break people down. Piss us off and waste our time And Bingo was his name-o. |

Money? The popular form of CAPTCHA used is reCAPTCHA, which was instituted, allegedly, as a way to digitize books.
With such a massive undertaking, those in charge of it all must be willing to pay organizations to use this system. Filehosts attracting a lot of traffic would therefore take advantage of this opportunity by putting CAPTCHAs in, forcing everyone to solve one. For each one solved, that helps the organization that created these pesky things, and the reward is financial compensation. Even without a goal of digitizing books, it's still smells of money making. Free users pour revenue into the filehosts without them knowing, and premium users actually pour revenue into the filehosts with the tradeoff of no CAPTCHAs. Either way, they're making money. At the same time, some filehosts such as Filefactory and Hotfile might not agree with such selling out to the CAPTCHA fiends, and thus continue their operations without them. For now. All of this is speculation on my part. Even if the more likely and realistic reason of pissing free users off is true, why do it and not make money off of it? It all points to financial gain in the end. |

They just don't want you to grab a load of links into your IDM or Jdownloader
and keep it going 24/7 without you paying for their premium service first. Back in the earlier days, I'd just keep it running at night while I was asleep. and wake up to gigs and gigs of free content. Now I keep it running during the day and get stuck in a vicious cycle. Download, captcha, download, captcha..etc |
