![]() The starship Enterprise could be built in 20 years
Robert Kirchgassner 'Star Trek' ship could become real Both Trekkers and non-Trekkers may be intrigued to know that the fictional starship Enterprise may be only 20 years and $1 trillion dollars away from becoming a real-life spacecraft. The years and cost to build a real starship were calculated by the man behind the Build the Enterprise website, which was set up recently. Its creator, known only as BTE-Dan and frustrated with the current state of humanity’s space exploration efforts, also has 30 years of experience as a systems and electrical engineer. The first nine years would focus on research, testing and drawing up blueprints. The following 11 would be used for development of components which would then be launched into space for assembly. Dan claims that the cost for the project can be met with 0.27 percent of the country’s GDP. He likened this to when NASA's budget averaged 0.5 percent of the country's GDP. He adds that the money spent equals just over one percent of the 2012 budget. “Above all else — the Enterprise will inspire us," Dan said. "And some of those inspired by this undertaking will surely be American young people — many of whom will likely become motivated to pursue careers as scientists and engineers." The website has daily traffic of over 40,000 people.

![]() Damn! Why not build the Millennium Falcon first?! That would be so badass, but that's me being a Star Wars fan. I never watched anything Star Trek. As a way of influencing people to pursue science as a career, it makes sense to build such a starship. Mostly though, it just seems like a huge waste of money. Unless people can ride in it, it might make a good special attraction as well.

![]() Well, if all countries of the world united, it would be a lot cheaper (per country).
Also, we all know that the first Enterprise is not going to be built until 2245, AND, we will not make first contact until 2063 ![]() |

![]() As soon as the build it, I'm joining Starfleet: I wanna explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, and boldly go where no man has gone before.

![]() If they can actually build an Enterprise, the force shields would take care of any space debris.
