Rapidshare: mystery rapids

Hi Guys,

As you probably all know, RS no longer gives its members Rapid points to reward downloads, but they do hand out Rapids as an 'Invite Friends Commission'.

I had a RapidPro membership for about 2 months now, and haven't invited anyone to join, yet my account is showing me in credit for 1788 Rapids awarded under this 'Invite Friends Commission' scheme:

I have no idea who these four people are, but am grateful to them.

Any other RapidPro members experienced the same?

my guess is somebody clicked one of your download links and then bought a premium membership before/after downloading the file.

that's how it used to work on a lot of the filesharing sites. actual referrals (where they click your referral link and buy) and 2nd hand referrals (where they buy an account after clicking one of your download links).

Remember when Rapidshare throttled down the dl speed for free users, about 2 months ago (ish)? So that free users cannot get anything faster than 30kbps (using "normal" methods and sites)?


Part of that strategy was -- as always -- to get free users to pay for Premium. Its probably working. And now premium users and uploaders will see these 30% commissions of rapids showing up -- if they're the lucky ones who provided the link that annoyed the free user enough to get them to pay.


Before that change, there was not nearly as much motivation to sign up for premium, if a person was only a downloader. Free speeds were awesome, no wait between, blah blah blah. So even though RS has had that "Commission" policy in place since May '11, it just hasn't had as much of an impact.


That's my theory, anyway.

Good point. However, I decided to sign of for a premium membership not for the downloads, but to ensure my uploads stayed up.

It was the first time ever that I opened my wallet to sign up for such a service: previously I had a free membership with MegaUpload, but when all my uploads vanished due to the court case, I wanted to re-upload all my scenes and be sure they wouldn't be deleted again. This was before RS started to throttle free users.

Noticed that rapids don't pile up in my acc anymore so anyone still using rs is a true sharer.

Same here: I was last credited with rapids on June 13th.

I 'earned' 6558 from when I joined in February: not bad for 4 months. Had it continued at the same rate, by now I'd have enough rapids to buy another 2 years of premium membership...
