So Many Filehosts- Aaaaarrrgghhh!!!
First I'd better outline my position - I'm a leecher, yes I download but don't upload and I just can't figure out how you uploaders can afford it. In my country New Zealand it costs NZ$80 for 80 gigabytes then NZ$2 per gig or throttlled back to dial up speed (add 20% for price in US $) and with 4 computer users in the house it doesn't take long for it to be used up. Couple that with speeds of 30/40 KBs if trying to download free versus approx 400KBs if I subscrbe to a filehost (plus continuity) you can see (I hope) my problem. At least Oron/ Filesonic had most of the downloads and I could subscribe but now with paypal & debit card options cut I won't go there.
And now to the point of this thread- Theres so many filehosts coming out of the woodwork and several with payment options I wont touch that its just about impossible to download anything unless its very small. I'll be pleased when it settles down to 1 or 2 hosts that you can pay for without wondering if your bank account will get hacked. Rant over, Have a good day |

Most ISPs in the US don't limit your intake like that, but a lot of members in NZ seem to have problems with it. A big advantage to uploading is having no limits involved. Personally, I pay a flat rate for my internet each month for a certain speed, and that's it. I don't pay by GB.
Of course, this is a valuable thing for mass-uploaders as well. I'm more of a casual uploader and a constant downloader than anything, but I don't now how mass uploaders could upload as much as they have with such limits as you have-- it seems impossible to me. You could do it gradually over time, but it wouldn't be the same. I'm a free user on all sites but DepositFiles as well, and I get my gold keys for free. I could pay for premium, but I just won't. Besides, you kind of lose the fun of the chase if you're constantly able to download everything. I like the waits if for no other reason than nostalgia. Most people are the "I want this and I want it now" types and they're willing to put money in these hosts' pockets to avoid a small wait. I don't see the logic in this, but whatever. |

Kiwis get a rough deal from the limited choices offered by their small number of ISPs.
It's so bad, that Netflix refuses to operate their service over there. Since there is little competition, the only solution is to legislate. I suggest you write to your MP and lobby him or her to bring up the matter in Parliament House. The must surely be many others that feel this situation is unacceptable since affordable internet access is now considered a basic human right.

The fragmentation of hosts is a huge problem, yeah, especially for those who pay for premium service. I'm always free, so on occasion I have the agony of wanting a set but finding that the host (usually Filepost) has already trashed it.

I hear you Kiwis & Aussies as well get really shafted on your internet service as a general rule, so that's good to hear. (I'm on another forum that's Aussie heavy.) Me, I have a low tier DSL line here in the US. I only get 80 up and 160 down but I can run the sucker for the whole month, as I don't have any limits. I would upgrade but I'd hate to either have to sell a kidney to afford it, or switch to another provider and have a limit then. Happy surfing. |

I consider myslef lucky: I'm UK based, and have a Talk Talk Plus account which comes with unlimited downloads. My monthly charge is £14.50.
It includes unlimited free calls to UK landlines, anytime, and a flat rate of 7 pence per minute to all UK mobiles, anytime. I really think our friends down under should let their voices be heard and demand an end to their exploitation at the hands of their ISPs.

Investments in sea-cables are quite expensive, and you absolutely need a bunch of them if you're NewZealand. Pretty easy economical law: considerably more than average fixed costs > meet > small market (demand) + low level of market competition = high product prices Still I feel for, you Snackles. It's a shame you don't even get a flat for your 80 Bucks. I Could tell you now that my 5MB/sec flat is only 20Eur per month, but that would be assholelike, wouldn't it? |
