Losing Subtitles When Editing MKV Files
Hello everyone -
So the title pretty much says it all. When I'm editing MKV files I lose the subtitles on the new file. I'm not changing the file format (keeping them MKV). What am I doing wrong? Many thanks for suggestions |

I don't have any small mkv files to try this out. I'm not smart, just a trial & error guy.
Convert the mkv to mp4 at same bitrate. Edit the mp4 and save. Re-encode in mkv. If that doesn't work & if it is a non-porn movie you can try to download subs from english-subtitles.org/english-subtitles/ Cheers |

mkv is a container. A normal video file in mkv will contain two parts, the audio stream and the video stream. Other items can be added, such as subtitles, chapters, multiple audio tracks, cover art, etc. These are all separate files within the mkv.
Open your mkv with a tool such as MKVToolNix and you can see what it contains. Your editing process is not keeping/adding the additional parts. |

Yes, OddBa11 is on the right track. The video program I use to edit or reencode saves as mkv but doesn't do anything with subs or chapters. Using MKVToolNix will allow you to open the original file and the new video/audio file, and you keep checked the boxes you want saved to the new file. Bit of a hassle, but easy to do.
I even take standalone subs and remux them with the movie into an MKV. Very useful tool and keeps your directories a little tidier. |
