Cellphone Service Question
I want to switch services, but keep my phone... first time doing the switch thing, so be gentle..
I have Straight Talk Prepaid (Walmart's service), and it's been okay, but it's kinda pricey and I hate having to go to WallyWorld every month (I don't live near one... imagine that). I used to have Tracfone, and liked it (and their cards are sold at a lot more places so it's convenient), and I want to switch to their service. My phone is compatible with their service (I checked), and if I can switch my number over, that's a plus, but not a dealbreaker. My question is... what do I need to do to switch? I'm guessing I need a Tracfone SIM card, and a prepaid card (for whatever amount I choose)... can anyone outline the basic steps, with approximate costs, if possible? If applicable, I'd like at least 2-3 Gb of data per month (I use mostly WiFi where I am) with unlimited calls/text. ST charges $35/mo, and I know I can do better than that. Thank you in advance.

Hi Lonewolf,
I can only give advice based on my experience here in the UK: Most providers offer a 'sim-only' deal: no device is bundled with the sim card. Most phones that came in a bundled deal are restricted to only work on the original providers network. Many retailers, particularly small independent stores often operating out of tiny premises will 'unlock' these phones so that they can be used on any network. This is perfectly legal and they usually charge between UKP£10/20 for this service. I would advise you to back up your contact list to your computer, so that you can then upload it to the new sim card.

Hi Lonewolf.
Not sure if this helps, I know you have 'weird' systems in the United States: This indicates TracPhone own Smart Talk, which should make things easier: Code:
http://quora.com/Can-I-put-a-SIM-card-from-one-TracFone-into-another-TracFone-and-keep-my-service?share=1 Code:
http://quora.com/How-do-you-use-a-TracFone-SIM-card-in-an-unlocked-phone Last time I did it in the UK, I phoned O2 to unlock my phone (as I bought it from an O2 store) only to find out it wasn't locked in the first place, then moved to GiffGaff (owned by O2) I have a monthly 'Goodybag' (it's like a contract but you change it every month if it's too high/low) for 2/3 the price of the same contract with O2 - currently it costs me £8 for 3GB data, unlimited calls, unlimited texts, and EU roaming.

Thanks for the replies thus far...
If it helps... - It is an LG Rebel 4 phone which I'm currently using on Straight Talk (for about 10 more days or so). - The phone came with a SIM card - I purchased a 128 Gb card for storage (not applicable here, but for info purposes) - Straight Talk and Tracfone (and others) use AT&T's towers for service, so I'm 99.9% sure about compatibility. - I like the phone itself and want to continue to use it. Whether I keep the same phone number is not an issue, as only four people have it.

i have a Tracfone, Samsung S7, and get the $50 plan+tax, plan is for about 10 to 12 weeks. I've never run out of data or gone over phone and messages and they carry over.

Ok, I couldn't help it... I fucked up... I called Tracfone.
After a 14 minute wait, then a callback from a Stephen Hawking soundalike, here's the gist: - Basically, Straight Talk and Tracfone are the same company. Straight Talk is Walmart, and Tracfone is... well... Tracfone. - My phone (and more importantly, SIM card) is fully compatible, so I don't have to buy a new SIM Activation Kit. - I just need to buy a Tracfone Prepaid service card and continue my service without interruption, and with the same phone number. If I had known all this upfront, I wouldn't have started a thread, so my bad for that... Anyway, I'll be going from a $35/mo plan to a $20/mo plan with the same features...
