not sure what it's called, but for about 20 years in the 90s/00s, rock drummers sat inside a lucite box (to prevent feedback, i assume). i rarely see it any more, at least when they appear on TV.
nor did i see it back in the 70s/80s when i was going to live concerts. was it, indeed, a passing fad? did better technology somehow render it moot? ----- just to double check, i went thru old SNL reruns. yep, no cage on early and late eps; frequent cage on mid-years batch. |

I think, however, and I'd have to run this by a sound engineer, the advent of in-ear monitors block out miscellaneous stage noise, while (hopefully) providing a balanced mix, and rendering various "blocking" material somewhat obsolete and/or unnecessary. |

Love Drums; can't play, but I love a good drum solo.
I have listened to this so many times; every now and then I just want to hear it again. The "Korean Drummer Girl"; 46 million views, I am not alone. Great performance, great show. |

Since the title of this thread is drums and drummers... I have a drummer story. Not much of a story but I am reminded of it after watching the Korean drummer girl:
About 25 years ago I knew a guy who to my absolute shock and surprise (he just dropped the info after I had known him for a time) used to be the drummer for a major group of the 70s and 80s, everybody knows this group; not going to say who they were or identify him in anyway.... He had to leave the band at the beginning of the 80s for health reasons. One of the first questions I asked him was: how do you twirl the drum sticks in your fingers, like a baton. I thought that was so cool! I was always in awe of the drumstick "hand in air" twirl. He laughed and said that is such a showoff bullshit move that every drummer knows how to do. It's an optical illusion. He then showed me how it is done: the drumstick is placed between your 2 middle fingers and moved back and forth and with wrist movement it makes it look like they are twirling the drumsticks in their fingers; they aren't. Not much of a story but every time I see that move done I think of him and remember it's a showoff move that isn't as hard as it looks. |

Same as Zytin.
I absolutely LOVE drums and percussions, but never really played them, unfortunately. The only thing I ever played in my life was just the piano. But I would've definitely loved to play drums. Speaking of drums, I always adored Joey Jordison's style very very much

maybe westerners are "faking" it, but if a korean girl appears to be spinning her drumsticks, i would start with the assumption that she probably is. they start at like age 3, after all. |
