Hi All,

Bill's people have finally decided to tackle a gaping hole present in most versions of Windows since Windows NT 3.1.

The monthly security update will also tackle a further 25 holes in Windows, five of which are rated as "critical".

well that's 26 fixed, just 999,000 to go.

since i installed windows XP from the original cd it has increased in size 4x just from the patches, it never ends.

I hate that sh.t!..I installed XP Pro in 2002,and disabled updates.
Never had an update..Never had a problem.
If it ain't broke don't fix it.

No offense, but that's a very bad idea unless your computer is not hooked up to the Internet. Windows update is there for a reason. There are a million different attack vectors for an 8 year old XP setup. You paid MS to support your computer with updates, so make use of them.

In my experience, the correlation between "Windows Update is turned off" and "My computer has a dozen viruses and is part of a botnet" is very high.

This bug affects the WoW32 subsystem, and thus doesn't affect 64-bit Windows version since they are incapable of running 16-bit programs.

I agree it's a simple, even ignorant approach, but I'm stickin' with it.
I wouldn't recommend it for everyone.
I have a shutoff button on my modem,and it's within reach.
I go to a site,then shut off the modem untill I navigate.
So it's only on when I'm using it.
Update & run virus programs often.
So far,so good..For 8 years.

You've got more brass than I have. I'm using XP Pro, update religiously and have AV and malware programs and still end up with crap I can't get rid of.
So about every 4 to 6 months I do a clean reinstall and suffer with wasting a day or so installing all the updates again.

I just use a old computer with nothing but windows, browsers & anti-virus on it to surf the net and after i know things are safe i transfer what i want to keep to good computers.

if my internet computer get infected i just use norton ghost to restore it and i am back up and running with a fresh install in 10 minutes instead of taking half a day to reinstall windows & updates manually. even if there is no sign of infection i reload the computer every week just to be sure.

They should both be changed regularly, and for the same reason. Let's clean house this year. Get rid of the whole bunch.
