Help, I fucked up
Hi there,
A couple months ago I purchased a new laptop, and had a bud help me set it up, create log in etc. It has facial recognition of sorts and an oled screen. I unfortunately lost all the info (on a notepad, passwords etc.) and recovery attempts have been futile. Maybe entered email incorrectly...not sure. The question is how do I start over, I mean really over. Ideally without formatting the hd. The machine will not let me in without a password. Questions to the manufacturer were met with indifference, and Microsoft has been no help either. It has Win 11 for the OS. What steps might I take shy of taking it somewhere or hiring mobile tech support? I suspect more info is needed, but I should start somewhere. Thanks in advance! PD |

Go to the login screen on your laptop. After a failed attempt the "Reset password" button appears under the password entry box. Click on "Reset password" and the screen will display the 3 security questions you set up. Once you answer then click "Enter".

Other than launching into Recovery and losing everything. Only other option to save files, is to slave the HDD and copy from another computer. Good Luck!

I lost all the info for Windows log in, the email recovery is not working. Even if I reset the machine I am afraid windows will still want my password or pin. Right now, when I try to use it is requests the pin.

There are a number of bootable cd/dvd software packages that will allow you to reset all the passwords on your PC. My personal favorite is Zen Suse but unless you work somewhere that has a N0v3ll site license, this can be hard to get & use. A simple search should give you a number of .iso files to choose from such as PasswordReset. You will need a PC with a writeable optical drive, run the .iso and it will burn to disc. Insert the disc if it is not recognized as bootable, simply hold down the power key and repeat except start tapping F12 key or whichever key your operating system requests. Once you boot into the reset software, it should present you with a list of all accounts on the PC and you can reset the password. I would also suggest adding a new local admin account with a very simple, short password- either (Pa55w0rd) is pretty common as a backdoor. Good Luck!
