m4v files are pretty much the same as mp4 files; you can simply rename the file to mp4 if necessary. The .m4v container was developed by Apple in order to allow .mp4 files to have optional DRM protection for videos bought from iTunes. Many Apple devices, as well as some other non-Apple ones, will accept .m4v but not .mp4, so some encoding programs (such as Handbrake) default to marking files as .m4v rather than .mp4. Handbrake made that change in order to allow Handbrake-encoded videos to be played by iTunes and Quicktime, as well as on the Playstation 3. The later versions of Handbrake (over the past year) seem to default to mp4 again, so compatibility may not be an issue any longer.
