mov files mp43 codec
I am having trouble viewing and editing a file with mov extension
I am running win98 and winmedia8 I can't update to winmedia9 because it doesn't support win98 I also use vlc and it won't play the file I also use virtualdub and it won't open the file I think that the file uses mp43 codec. microsoft controls this codec and there are unapproved (because of copyright) versions. I tried angelfire but got warnings and no sucess. file is molly rome different strokes search molly rome posts -- it is first. I like vlc and virtualdub and will share info thanx bud |

Try downloading and installing QuickTime for Windows. You should be able to view it with QT.
.mov files are native to Mac. ______________________________________________________________ I DL'd the file and unrar'd. It played fine on QuickTime. I have the Perian plug-in which is a universal codec for QT. This may not work for you, with a windows machine. If you're still having trouble, Google mp43 and look for a convertor.

Hi bud2007,
You asked me to convert the file (to avi or someother format), but I haven't done this yet as it would take several hours to do so: I am very busy and when I'm uploading files, it slows down my computer and prevents me from getting on with the professional side of my life... One thing that I would recommend, though, is moving on from Windows 98. I mean, that OS is over 10 years old, no wonder you struggle with files in a format created after your OS was released: time to get with the program and update your operating system. PC guys: can anyone help bud with directions as to how to ugrade his OS? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_98

toyman and alexora
thank you for your prompt replies and advice just installed quicktime 6.5.2 ( apple site says it works for win98 -- last release that does) compressor problem with file identifies mp43 codec associated with file bottom line file doesn't play but I will look into this further why not update win98? good question, first I would need the disk(s) second win98 is very stable and my applications of povray (probably no problem) and the c compiler (DJGPP) I use and have written applications with (also probably no problems) are more important to me than an new operating system I believe in open source software but not motivated enough to migrate to Linux also second above still problems can be challenges and learning motivators and I try to have an open mind I've googled mp43 heavily but there is still more thanx again |

Well, Bud,
For a decade you used that OS, and have now met your first obstacle (as far as I am aware of). I realize that switching from Windoes 98 to a relatively contempoary system such as XP or, God forbid, Vista is a chore, and that your current applications may not work if you move on. The question is, since you won't make the great leap forward, how many more decades are you willing to wait before taking your place among those who have not waited? It's not that bad, and speaking as a Mac user, it took some getting used to moving from OS 9 to OSX, but I have no regrets: now I too can view AVI files, before I could not and hated that fact... As far as getting "the disks" is concerned, bare in mind that most windows OS's can be found for free id you look for them: that's why I suggested PC users get in touch with you to help.

toyman and alexora
I appreciate your input and contributions toyman I checked the perian plug in and, though it is related, it appears useful primarily for mac users alexora I have been using this computer for less than 3 years and each day it works I am grateful -- a friend gave it to me. It has a 500 mhz pentium and I have to carefully watch my disk capacity 10 gig. That's why I crop cut join and convert with vlc and some other tools. I'm sure you do something similar based on viewing your facial thread. I now have the file in question as a result of a google search but thanks for your offer. Hope to upgrade sometime when I obtain a faster computer with greater disk capacity. I understand that the space shuttle uses 386 type processors because they can be radiation hardened. great forum thank you all ps: I don't see my thanks clicks appearing hope you get them |

thank you for your offer I found the file in wmv format with a google search and have already edited it to my satisfaction. The file was described in my first post by using the the forum's search -- I used the search post option. good luck |
