Hey,

So it's an external drive with a 500Gb HD.
I plug it in, and instead of working like usual, it makes a weird little "tic tic tic..." noise and Windows can't recognize it.

It it dead?
Is there any way to retreive the data?

the tic tic tic noise is usually a head move error. the arm that moves the head over the disks isnt moving correctly. i hate to tell you this, but that drive is done......there are ways to recover the data, but they will cost in the thousands of dollars.

Also if your hard drive is full of porn, whoever trys to get that back will see it, make sure their wasn't stuff on it that you dont want the world to see, I moved a few years ago and i had to throw my computer stuff in a box, wires mouse keyboard etc, and my external hard drive, everything was 100% fine until i was carrying the box up stairs into my new place, my eyes were blocked with the stuff, my foot missed a step and i dropped the box, everything stayed working except my hard drive, like yours it still lit up, it just didnt load, so it was full of adult stuff so i couldnt get it looked at, i ended up taking off the enclosure, taking a small, very small screwdriver and tightened a few bolts that fell loose and i noticed the entry where the wire go's in was blocked, so i used the broken end of a cotton swab, cleaned it out and put it back together and it was fine, just a few pieces were loose and needed tightening, that may be what you need, its probably not fully broken, trust me i dropped mine on cement, and it didnt fully kick the bucket, im sure yours didnt, but to find out, you will need to open the shell, but mine wasn't clicking, your issue may be more caused by the internal mechanism as oppose to it being damaged

Don't do that, you'll make it worse, you should only ever open a drive fully in a special room with clean air and not too much light.

Opening it will make it even worse, unless your a technician dont do that, it may just be dead, its like anything else, a tv, a monitor a mouse a keyboard, fans.. they die, they dont last forever

I have had several external hard drives stop working in the past and i took them out of the external enclosure and put them in my computer and they worked fine.
Sometimes it is the little control board in the external drive enclosure that goes bad and not the hard drive.

Only open it up if you're willing to accept it is unsalvagable.
If you feel there is any other chance to save it, don't open it.

I know if I had one headed to the garbage, curiosity would make me open it just to see

Does you drive require a power cord or is it only USB cable?
I was thinking it was the USB only type.
