Chicago Cubs to award Steve Bartman a World Series ring
(this might belong in the sports section)
Last edited by scaramouche; 2nd August 2017 at 16:35.
The Chicago Cubs will be presenting a 2016 World Series ring to long suffering fan Steve Bartman, who was made the scapegoat for their collapse in the 2003 NLCS. Code:
http://espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/20210036/chicago-cubs-giving-world-series-ring-steve-bartman "Although I do not consider myself worthy of such an honor, I am deeply moved and sincerely grateful to receive an official Chicago Cubs 2016 World Series Championship ring." I am fully aware of the historical significance and appreciate the symbolism the ring represents on multiple levels. My family and I will cherish it for generations. Most meaningful is the genuine outreach from the Ricketts family, on behalf of the Cubs organization and fans, signifying to me that I am welcomed back into the Cubs family and have their support going forward. I am relieved and hopeful that the saga of the 2003 foul ball incident surrounding my family and me is finally over. "I humbly receive the ring not only as a symbol of one of the most historic achievements in sports, but as an important reminder for how we should treat each other in today's society. My hope is that we all can learn from my experience to view sports as entertainment and prevent harsh scapegoating, and to challenge the media and opportunistic profiteers to conduct business ethically by respecting personal privacy rights and not exploit any individual to advance their own self-interest or economic gain. "Moreover, I am hopeful this ring gesture will be the start of an important healing and reconciliation process for all involved. To that end, I request the media please respect my privacy, and the privacy of my family. I will not participate in interviews or further public statements at this time. "Words alone cannot express my heartfelt thanks to the Ricketts family, Crane Kenney, Theo Epstein, and the entire Cubs organization for this extraordinary gift, and for providing the City of Chicago and Cubs fans everywhere an unforgettable World Championship in 2016. I am happy to be reunited with the Cubs family and positively moving forward with my life." Pretty classy move, but I don't know if it makes up for nearly 14 years of ridicule, humiliation, and death threats that drove Bartman so far underground that only his closest friends and family know where he's located. |

I don't follow baseball.
I don't even know who this guy is. I had to look him up and after reading the WIKI page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Bartman_incident I wouldn't give him anything. He is very selfish - his need to show off by catching a ball costed the Cubs a Championship. This BS need by baseball fans to have to catch a stupid baseball and some of them even get into violent fights with each other in the stands over the damn thing is just totally asinine. There are more pressing and important and vital issues and needs in life than a stupid ball. |

The fact that you don't follow baseball is blatantly apparent.
People catch foul balls at baseball games all the time, it's half the fun of being at the game. This poor guy tried to catch a ball that had it been another few inches over wouldn't have never even been talked about. Bartman was used as an excuse for the Cubs caving during that playoff game. The pitching at the end of the game was horrendous and that's why they lost, not because of Bartman. BTW: The Cubs fans should be ashamed of the way they acted that night.

As a lifetime Cub fan, this guy deserved the ring and more. He basically had to go into hiding because ignorant fools (including the outfielder Moises Alou) decided it was somehow Steve Bartman's fault they lost that series. Not only did everyone else around him also reach for that ball, but the team easily could have won the series. They made errors following that play, they had one more game with their best pitcher, at the time, starting.
It was a very odd incident. Wrigley, at the time, had no video screen to watch replays on, so very few people even understood what had happened. Slowly news made it around the stadium, and it was realized this guy might literally be lynched. Even the friends he went to the game with abandoned him. He needed security and police to escort him out. As mentioned before, his life was destroyed after that. The response to receiving the ring is the first time he has said anything to the public since issuing a short apology he didn't need to after the game. He has been stalked for well over a decade by media and delusional people... Sports fans can be some of the biggest meatheads when they get so involved in the outcome of games that they cease any reasonable thinking. They base their entire emotional well-being on grown men playing a game. Catching a ball that goes into the stands at a baseball game is a split second thing. There is no way anyone in his position could have sat there and thought about letting the outfielder make the catch. The guy wasn't even reaching beyond the stands (like that punk Yankee fan kid). A hard ball is headed towards you, your hands go up. Goats, curses, Bartman... none of that had anything to do with the Cubs not winning for over a century. That is the thinking of fans coming up with excuses. |

Their manager should have recognized the gravity of the situation and come out to the mound and told the players to forget that stupid play and get their heads back on straight. Instead they collapsed. But again this wasn't game 7, they blew the next game as well. |

I love following sports and while this poor guy was made to be the fall guy for ONE singular play, the event took a toll on him ever enjoying his team. He was just an average fan and how many of us might not have done the same thing by reaching out? This one act was not the reason the Cubs lost the series.
The Cubs ownership made a nice PR gesture. I really hope that this poor guy can have some semblance of normalcy in his life for this one simple gaffe. |

http://veterperementour.ru/showthread.php?t=859391 Same can be said for the Super Bowl. The team that wins the Super Bowl each year is the World Champion for a year. World Champion? How is that so? All the teams in the NFL are located in the United States. This is one of the many reasons why folks in other countries see Americans (of the United States) as ARROGANT. |

Toronto Blue Jays. Canadian team. Plus many athletes are from other countries, such as the Dominican Republic.

Not to continue an off topic debate, but I guess I will. Just ask yourself where the best players in the world come to play for the big four sports in the states. Baseball, Basketball, Hockey, and to a much lesser extent, American football, are all filled with international players. The goal of any player in those sports is to come to these leagues and play. Even long time players in Japanese baseball leagues strive to get a big contract from an MLB team. I seriously doubt THIS is the reason the USA is considered arrogant. Our soccer league wouldn't ever call themselves world champs, for the same reasoning.
If other countries have an issue with that, they can form their own leagues and poach the best players in the world to their nation. |
