firewall?
So I currently use Zone Alarm. I recently updated it and now it makes browsing the internet so god damn slow, slower than what it was before. I can barely download anything, an mp3 to a youtube vid to a porno, without making the internet slow down to shit.
can anyone recommend me a firewall that doesn't throttle my surfing speed while I do basic internet stuff and download at the same time? |

While it's better than nothing, it doesn't play well with other brands of anti-virus software other than their own, and it probably screwed up something in either one of your settings. I've got the ZA security suite and am having no issues with it at all. |

Agreed. Not only Comodo firewall, but get Comodo Security Suite(free). It has everything and actually works.

Absolutely agree on Comodo for their free firewall. The biggest downside to it is that for the first week or two, you will find it to be very intrusive as it "learns" what you want and don't want to allow. After that, its pretty much transparent.
OTH, (and no disrespect meant to Rodac) I wouldn't recommend using the rest of the suite. No real problem with it, but I'm a believer in the security rule of three. I teach all my students that they should use products from different makers for firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware. The reasoning is that a hacker who can blow through a Comodo firewall, will likely be able to get past their anit-virus as well, but might not be able to get past AVG/Avast/Avira/MSE (all free anti-virus). Basically, the hope is that just because they understand the workings of one company, doesn't mean they understand the workings of another company. Don't know how valid the philosophy actually is, but I've been following for many years now on many computers and I've never suffered anything harsher than tracking cookies.

MSE.
Microsoft Security Essentials. I've used many firewalls and never too happy mainly because it slowed my pc down but MSE works pretty amazing...free first of all, very good security and doesn't slow my pc down in any way. So yeah...MSE. But I will keep Comodore in mind if I ever need one. Never tried that one out.

MSE is a straight up anti-virus. But if you've got Windows installed, chances are, you've got Windows Firewall installed by default as part of it. Windows firewall is installed with all versions of Windows after XP Service Pack 2. In fact, if you've got another firewall installed, then you better make sure that you disable the Windows Firewall. That may well be why you're encountering a slowdown. You may have two firewalls conflicting with each other.

I use to run all the popular anti virus software, Spybot, Malwarebytes, AVS, and others. After having to reinstall windows about four times to get rid of embedded viruses, I tried Comodo and haven't had a problem since. That was years ago. I run it once a day before shutting down. Takes about five minutes. For someone that complains about everything, I am truly impressed with Comodo. |
