DVDs are flat and look like crap (@ least to me) Analogue is 1000% better.. An interesting page on this: http://adequacy.org/stories/2001...12921.289.html Im so grateful to have alot of my favourite movies on VHS in pure analogue! (Store bought SP mode tapes) VHS is much better,no surprise.. ANALOGUE is much better! (Always has been ) |

Really? VHS has a lot of nostalgic value, that's for sure, but it is really quite a different experience watching a DVD or better yet a Blu-Ray, having a REALLY large screen and a REALLY good audio system, especially if it's a more recent film. The only thing I don't like about digital mediums is the fast forwarding, you get that jittery digital stuff, but with VHS, it is a lot smoother and you can actually see what's going on while fast forwarding.

I can't think of one thing I like about VHS. Just a dead, out dated technology.

blu ray rules. vhs is dead, can't see it ever making any type of comeback like viynal records did
just a dead medium, the picture is terrible and so is the sound, dvd is so much handier for pausing and chapter stops and you don't have to rewind the feckers to the start

By the way, I'm sure you guys (or at least some of you) are familiar with James Rolfe aka The Angry Video Game Nerd. He did a series of videos on dead video formats on his site, I don't know if I'm allowed to post a link to that, but it was really great fun to see Betamax, Laserdisc and some others as well. Each one had some interesting things about them.
As a film geek, an avid cinema lover and collector of films, I do like dead formats and find them fascinating in a way. I did keep original VHS copies of some of my favorite films even though I have them on DVD (even multiple editions on that, as well). I do think DVDs and Blu-Rays, when used to their full capacities, are the best formats at this moment, but VHS does have its kind of nostalgic charm. |

A much larger catalog. DVDs and BRs have no where near the availability and diversity of the VHS format. And Hollywood's unwillingness to re-release smaller old films with limited appeal means that VHS is the only place to get them. Especially foreign language pics. Video quality. While DVDs and BR can be of a much higher quality, that all depends on if the film was properly restored to begin with. I've seen many DVDs with the same bad(or worse) quality as the VHS version. It all really depends on who's distributing it and how much they're willing to spend on the re-issue. I've actually seen many VHS tapes with better image and sound quality than their digital counterparts. Inadvertent(or purposeful) censorship: Whether it's because of re-formatting to letterbox, or because the studios have trimmed them because of pressure, many films that were essentially uncut in VHS format are now missing(or have cropped) various scenes. And these are being touted as uncut restored releases. Hardcore (1979) and Carrie (1976) are 2 examples off the top of my head. The cover art: much better than many DVDs. Some have become collector's items because of the artwork. VHS is no more dead than albums and beige dial telephones. There's always gonna be the complete collector that wants them.

Myth #2. Video quality. This really goes without debate, VHS is just much lower quality every time. If you find a DVD with crap quality, keep looking, you will find a better one. Myth #3. censorship: For as many DVD's that are censored there are dozens of DVD rips with extended or new cuts where there is more of the film then was ever on VHS. Myth #4. The cover art: I really don't care about that. I can always get the covers off google images or something else if I really want them. Last Myth: VHS is no more dead than albums. Bottom line is VHS is not even in the same ballpark as vinal. Not the same thing at all. |

Lucas is a cunt, his career ended in 1977, since then the few films he has directed sucked horribly. He has not written anything (alone) since then either that was of any worth. He is the one exception to this VHS debate that I can think of. |

You obviously don't really watch B-movies, there ARE tons of movies that you would never ever find on a digital format. Even if you would, it's just the VHS or some even worse copy simply transfered to a DVD, looking and sounding the same. Just to give another Star Wars example: the Holiday Special. It will never be released on DVD or Blu-Ray or anything else in the future. Even the VHS copies are not official of course cause it was only broadcast once I believe on television in the 70s so it was just pure luck that there were people with VHS recorders back then who taped it.
