Sounds like the network interface is limited to wifi speed
You need to say more about your setup now and how you used to connect

1) Your internet network connection cable could be damaged or loose.
2) The Wireless connection you are using is damaged or loose. 3) The internet network plugin in your laptop is damaged. 4) The line in for your internet connection is damaged or has a short. (Yes there is a small current of electricity in your internet line!) 5) Your ISP is reducing the internet speed at certain times when there is a lot of traffic. (Keep in mind that all ISPs offer their internet services for speeds up to a specific amount. That does not mean the speed will be at peak at all times.) Check what you can at your end. If your connections are all fine then do a line trace to your modem's IP address. If there is a large dropoff just before or at your modem's IP you most likely have a line problem or short. Contact your ISP and ask them to conduct a line trace. Also if you have a line problem there will be times, especially in wet weather, you will loose your internet connection all together due to an electrical short. Another common line problem is the ground wire getting corroded and causing a short. This normally occurs around this time of year as the weather warms up. |

Could be anything, really. If you have Windows 10, you might try running the appropriate troubleshooter. The first thing I would check is the network adapter, and its settings, but you have to have some knowhow before changing those settings.

Are you talking about 40GbE, or 100GbE ethernet?

Do you use Xfinity(comcast?) if so go to a search engine and type in Xfinity speed test, that will take you to a website that runs a test at how fast your connection is, what the mbps speed is etc, it wont tell you the problem, but it will tell you the speed, rate and connection you have and it will offer how to increase speeds, it also might be time to swap your modem for one thats newer, if you use a modem.

It could be a Wi-Fi issue: as well as trying a wired connection, check out your Wi-Fi by logging in to another network (library, café, friend's house, etc) when you have a chance.
If you experience the same problem, then you would know it's not your router, but your laptop.

Can you check the model of your in-built wi-fi card?
The HP site's a bit rubbish, all it says is: 802.11b/g/n WLAN 'n' maxes out at a theoretical 300Mbps, however, even that depends how many radios are built into the card. I suspect part of the problem's the fact your laptop is, sorry to be blunt here, ancient - the U4100 dates from 2009, my Acer from back then is practically dead - although in its defence that's largely because the CMOS battery has died and is too much effort for me to replace.
