One feature of Game of Thrones I like the most is the fact they have limited the amount a 'high fantasy' items such as wizards, dragons and other magic creatures which means when these things do crop up they are quite potent as plot devices and threats. I find the show refreshing as it delves deeply into the politics between and sometimes within feuding noble families. And of course a certain perverted foul mouthed short noble man who enjoys taking advantage of the lifestyle (wine and woman) being born into his bloodline can afford.

I actually just watched Seasons I and II for the first time last month, so I'm still on a bit of a high from it. It's really a heavy hitter for the best show on TV, and that is coming from a big "Sons of Anarchy" fan.
One thing I like about this show is the fact that there are no main characters. The plot follows a handful of different people in different situations-- the one thing they all have in common is that they seek to claim the Iron Throne, and they're willing to burn the world around the throne to ashes to do it. There are certain characters that are easier to like than others. Cersei is certainly the easiest to hate, and Joffrey? That little prick has to die a cruel death-- the only question is, who is going to be the one to gut him? Tyrion definitely grows on you, and characters like him are the reason I always route for the villains. He's an asshole, sure, but he's an intelligent, calculating asshole. And I love his relationship with Shae (who is played by an ex-pornstar, by the way). She came in and truly humbled him. My favorite character is/was definitely that of Drogo. I can appreciate the histories of royalty, but the truth is that on a personal level, I can't relate to it. I was raised poor, so I tend to take more to self-made individuals. And with Drogo's tribe, the Dothraki, one can become a king or a peasant by their own efforts. And, of course, there is Daenerys. Her evolution is cool to watch. She came from wealth, but became a tool for her brother's quest for the Iron Throne. After her marriage to Drogo, however, she slowly evolved into a strong independent woman who led an army of Dothraki. I won't lie-- I would much rather see her sit on the Iron Throne than any of the others. Fuck birthright, she has earned it. This is an awesome show. Can't wait for the next season. |

Yeah, the 3-eyed raven was the initiator in one of the character's recurring dreams in previous seasons.
I found that interesting. In symbolism, ravens represent either the souls of the dead or a messenger of peril to come. A third eye represents clear vision into one's self or the events surrounding. And the raven seems to act as a guide to Bran, so one can assume that his dreams are showing him a clear scope into the future of Winterfell. Strangely enough, there are no mentions of his sisters or his mother in these dreams-- it all goes back to his home. |

I came to 'Thrones' well after the fact: I was vaguely aware that there was something called Game of Thrones, but somehow imagined it was probably a PC MMO game!
Then I read Saints' post in the What TV Shows Are You Currently Following? thread and realized that not only GoT is a TV show, but is apparently very good. Soon after that I was on my favourite TV and movies streaming site, with the intention of giving the show a try: if the pilot episode caught my fancy, I would follow through with the other episodes. I was hooked right from the go: 'Thrones' paints a rich and highly detailed world upon a large canvas, with a great ensemble of characters. Set in a fantasy world that roughly mirrors the European medieval world, it is set in the continents of Westeros and Essos, and just as was the case with Europe's medieval feudal system, the various territories are ruled by lords under the King. We have high intrigue as various parties scheme against each other for power and influence in ways reminiscent of the ancient Roman Empire or Machiavelli's Italy. GoT does not shy away from depicting full nudity, realistic violence and frequent use of Bad language, but never as a gratuitous of titillating offering: the sex, violence and bad language make the characters and situations very believable and offer an insight into the prime motivators of the quest for power that has driven humanity from time immemorial. Across the two seasons, a few characters stand out: Sean Bean (of Sharpe fame, and also known to many as 006 in GoldenEye), Charles Dance (a great actor most associated with playing villains) and Peter Dinklage (whom I thought was excellent in The Station Agent), but this isn't a show about stars: it is ensemble acting and all play their part well. As Saints points out there are some hardcore pornstars among the cast: just goes to show that there is life after porn. I won't go into plot details so as not to spoil it for those who have not yet watched GoT. To them I can only say: what are you waiting for?

Having read all five of the books and waiting for the 6th to be released I have enjoyed the HBO version, though a lot is lost in taking the books to the screen. There is gratuitous sex in show, the following of a whore and her acceptance into a whore house run by Little Finger. There was no such character or lez scene in the books. HBO did miss plenty of opportunity for other sex and nude shots if that's what they were after.
They have stayed pretty much with the books though they are running things together a bit. Time constraints and money no doubt. HBO is getting a little ahead of themselves concerning the time frame. They are already dipping into books two and three. I hope they can constrain themselves. There's enough material there for years of episodes to keep viewers coming back. And lots of room for new characters as most of the characters your following right now will be dead by book five. |

I'll hide my opinion so as not to spoil anything for those who haven't watched the first two seasons. Might I suggest that we all do that, especially the book readers?
cheers Gene
