"Can you give an actual example of the 3-2-1 cuse I don't get it.
Why would you make 3 copies of which 1 is on another location? I mean: this implies that you would make the other 2 copies on the same location, and what good would that be for?" Everyone will have their own way of doing things. But you need copies of your data in case your hard drive fails. Then you need a copy off site (at another location) in case there is a fire, or theft etc. Its a lot of work, but I do it because I have spent years collecting all of my "data" and I'd hate to lose it.

stay away from WD external drives as they have hardware encryption so if you enclosure fails you wont be able to get the data by connecting the drive to a SATA port. You will have to find a similar enclosure (tho I am not 100% sure if that will work).

"Same location" would be your home. For example: One copy on the computer, a second copy on another drive in your closet for easy access, and a third copy on a drive offsite for a worse case scenario.

^ No, doesnt matter if you set a password or not...data is always encrypted on most models and can only be accessed as long drive is inside the enclosure. If you google you can find links of people asking for help trying to get their data back after enclosure failure.

Not all of the external drives are actually encrypted. The problem that you can't access the data if you get the hdd out of its enclosure is in many cases the 4 kB sector "emulation" many (older) external drives have to ensure XP compatibility. Can be checked in msinfo32 if you look at the bytes per sector info of the external drive. If it says 4096 it's one of those drives. The newer Seagate & WD drives with the new design don't have that anymore.

Wow 14TB
I am pleased to see that Seagate now have 14 TB hard drive in their Iron Wolf Range I have a 10TB drive and its starting to get full I was thinking about moving to a 12TB but that only gives me another year or two. So if I bit the bullet and jumped to a 14TB I should be ok for another 3 or 4 years! But then I need two or three of them for backups and they are starting to get expensive at $1000 each!

Reason: Typo Iron Wolf
