It's MySQL, which is the standard for vBulletin. No one with a modicum of common sense uses MSSQL or Oracle if it can be avoided. Especially Oracle asks for your firstborn child for license payment and MS isn't cheap either. I assume it will be MariaDB after the Xenforo migration.

Whether attempts at recovering the data are ongoing, are on hold for the weekend, or have failed miserably, I have no idea.

That's a very interesting comment. The US government and California use MSSQL and Oracle, in fact SharePoint requires MSSQL unless it is SPO. So that be the 6th and 2nd largest global economies. The key is having a DR strategy. No fan of the Big Red O or MS but there is a reason MSSQL is the largest RDBMS suite in the world with a multi-colored flag logo.

Plus the campus in Silicon Valley is pretty impressive.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could inform the users of an update and a possible data loss BEFORE the scheduled update, like with a banner on the front page, so they don't waste their precious time?
