Star Trek: Discovery, the first new Star Trek series in over twelve years, will make its debut on CBS this fall, with new episodes soon to follow on CBS’ streaming service CBS All Access. We also know it’ll change some Roddenberry mandates. Ok, we’ve known all of that for awhile, as well as the time period of the show (ten years before Kirk, Spock and the U.S.S. Enterprise), but aside from that, there have been few details about the actual plot line of the series.

Will they be “Seeking new worlds and new civilizations” like the original series did, or will this be a more layered, complicated show, like Star Trek: Deep Space Nine? The folks at Entertainment Weekly got a chance to chat with the series showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen J. Berg, who managed to reveal some new plot info, as well as something quite interesting – Discovery will be the first Trek show to feature two starships on a regular basis, the titular ship and the U.S.S. Shenzou.

We already knew from trailers and pre-release info that Sonequa Martin-Green’s character would start on the Starship Shenzou, captained by Michelle Yeoh’s character of Captain Phillipa Georgiou, but it looks like both ships will be part of the series from the pilot going forward. Deep Space Nine back in the ’90s had action on the Starship Defiant and the space station, but having two Federation starships on the regular is new ground for the franchise.

Other tidbits were dropped by the producers in the interview, like the revelation that Sonequa Martin-Green’s character of Lt. Michael Burnham is a character that was the very first human to ever be allowed into the Vulcan Science Academy, under the tutelage of Sarek, Spock’s father, played by Orphan Black star James Frain. As revealed in previous interviews, the character of Lt. Burnham will be the first non-Captain to be the lead on a Star Trek series.

When the producers were asked which previous Trek series would serve as inspiration for this new show, the duo didn’t hesitate, saying “There’s a hint of all of them, but in the writers’ room people are so in love with The Original Series and Next Generation, and they talk about the family aspect of those cast members.” Citing TOS and TNG is not surprising ,as they were easily the most popular of the Star Trek shows. They also cited staff writer Nicholas Meyer’s films, specifically Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, often seen as the high point of the film series. In terms of the visual look, they went for something more cinematic, saying that CBS allowed them to shoot in an aspect ratio of 2:1.

Bryan Fuller has extensive writing and production experience, on shows such as Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, Pushing Daisies, Hannibal, and American Gods.

He did a lot of work on Star Trek: Voyager, and wrote episodes for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Alex Kurtzman's writing credits include Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness, Transformers and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, as well as directing The Mummy and Star Trek Into Darkness.

Game of Thrones Inspired Star Trek: Discovery to Kill More Main Characters

The final frontier is a scary place. Sure, it might be full of adventure, but as we know from previous Star Trek shows, it’s also where you get mind-controlled or forced to fight your buddies to the death. Star Trek: Discovery is taking this one step further by not restricting death sentences to Red Shirts. And it’s all thanks to one phrase: Valar morghulis.

Showrunners Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts told Entertainment Weekly that main characters aren’t safe from the slaughterhouse in this latest Star Trek series. They said their approach was influenced by Game of Thrones, where even the most beloved, characters could die horribly at any moment.

“They almost made it difficult to fall in love with people because you didn’t know if they were going to be taken away from you,” Berg said.

This isn’t the first time a Star Trek show has killed off a protagonist. For example, Tasha Yar was killed off in the season 1 episode “Skin of Evil.” However, that was because the actress quit the show and not an intentional choice by the showrunners. Harberts did assure fans that Discovery wouldn’t treat deaths gratuitously or for shock value, adding: “When it happens we want to make sure that people really feel it.”

So, which characters are most likely to attend the Red Shirt Wedding? Some online speculation suggests that Jason Isaacs’ Captain Lorca will be the first to go, possibly after turning on his crew; below-the-line comments for almost any article on the show are full of fans betting on Lorca’s death. Even Vanity Fair has come out and said the dude is probably a dead man walking.

However, it looks likely that it will be Michelle Yeoh’s Captain Georgiou, who commands the U.S.S. Shenzou (Lorca is captain of the U.S.S. Discovery) and could likely die, leading Sonequa Martin-Green’s Commander Michael Burnham to be transferred to the Discovery. Unless, the Shenzou is the Discovery in disguise, which is a theory. Sadly, this comes with a caveat, as killing characters of color and women first is seen as a common and negative trope. We can hope Star Trek: Discovery doesn’t make that mistake and challenges itself rather than falling back on old Hollywood habits, but that’s probably not going to happen. Star Trek: Discovery is set to premiere September 24.

STAR TREK DISCOVERY Hired Fact Checkers and Superfans to Ensure Canon Adherence

The new Star Trek series Discovery is only a few months away from launching, and many longtime Trekkers have been worried that this prequel show might not adhere to the fifty plus years of continuity already established. After all—based on the trailers so far—the show, which is set a decade before the five year mission of Captain Kirk and Mister Spock on the Enterprise, looks very different aesthetically to anything in the classic series. Will CBS make sure that there are no major continuity contradictions to established Trek canon?

It appears so, as according to a report over at CNET, Star Trek Discovery producer Alex Kurtzman (who co-wrote the first two J.J. Abrams Star Trek films) said they actually hired a few Trek fact-checkers (and some superfan writers!) for the writers’ room to make sure that every storyline and episode idea does not step on the toes of established facts and stories within the canon of the Star Trek universe. No easy task, as we are talking about five live action series and some 700 episodes of television. You can read an excerpt from Kurtzman’s comments below:

“Without spoiling anything we are adhering to a timeline and sticking to the rules, but also I think finding some new areas and avenues that have only been alluded to, but never fully explored.”

“You have to respect canon as it’s being written. You can’t say, ‘That never happened.’ No, no no, you can’t do that, they would kill you. Star Trek fans would kill you. No, you have to respect canon. You have to understand the timelines and what the different timelines were and what the different universes were and how they all worked together. You have to keep very meticulous track of who, what, where, when and why. And we have people in the writer’s room whose sole job is to say, ‘Nope, can’t do that!'”

These comments are interesting, because—based on the trailers—we have a group of Klingons who look totally different from anything we’ve ever seen before in original Trek, and uniforms that contradict the look of the Starfleet uniforms used in the original series episode “The Cage,” which also took place ten years before Kirk and Spock.

Some things obviously are just going to be somewhat different, due to advances in special effects, but based on what we’ve seen, this all looks much more like the J.J. Abrams’ “alternate timeline” of the recent films than anything in the original series. Here’s hoping the writers on Discovery can somehow make this all work.
