Would I only be able to use my own? Or could I get a "repair disk" from someone else? I do not care about programs because I do not have programs installed on this laptop.

From your first post, it looks like you've had this "restart" crash problem only for the last couple of months.
You could try "system restore" to restore your PC to an earlier date, say 90 days before this day. Open System Restore by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button. In the search box, type System Restore, and then, in the list of results, click System Restore. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Another suggestion: Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Update\Change settings Choose "Dowload updates but let me choose whether to install them" from the drop down box. That way windows won't restart or install any updates without your permission. Some of the security updates are important and it would be unwise to just disable them completely.

System restore worked for about 4 hours, and I created another "point," but nothing is working at this moment. I might take my desktop to get it upgraded, so I can still use this one for now. Thanks for letting me know how to change the updates. I was wondering how to do that though. What was your point about updates, though? You said to "disable," but then you closed with "security updates are inpmortant ." It is as if you said "disable automatic updates, but that would be a mistake."

A guy at work gave me his Laptop to look at. It was barely functioning.
It took 4 hours but works just fine now, after:- Revo Uninstaller found lots of programs that he knew nothing about. Use the advanced removal settings for ANYTHING that looks doubtful. It's freeware. Use CCleaner. It's freeware. Use Auslogics Registry Cleaner. It's freeware. Use Auslogics Disk Defragmenter. It's freeware. Do you know what .NET is or does? I uninstalled it and don't download .NET updates. Just MS bloatware. Do you know what Silverlight is or does? I uninstalled it and don't download Silverlight updates. Just more MS bloatware. I don't miss either of these. I'm running a dual boot Mint Linux/Win7 64bit box and Opera. Auto Updates are turned off. I turned Windows Firewall off and installed Sphinx Windows 7 Firewall (Freeware version) which is called Vista Firewall Control (not to be confused with MS Vista OS). Do not allow any program to access the internet unless you know what it is going to do. I control what does or does not access the internet. I control what is downloaded to MY computer. I control what software is installed on MY computer. It's MY computer, not Adobe's or HP's or Microsoft's or DIVX's or anyone else's. Never use Microflop Internet Exploder unless there is no other way! Use only Chrome, Firefox or Opera on win systems. I are a highly uneducated and unskilled nobody. |

I was just referring to a post by another member whose suggestion was to turn off automatic updates completely. I would not recommend that. My suggestion was different. You let Windows download those updates but you should choose when to install them. That gives you more control doesn't it?

You could try AVG Rescue - http://avg.com/gb-en/avg-rescue-cd
(Using CD or USB stick) I'm unclear on this, but does it automatically start in Safe Mode or you have to start in Safe Mode to stop windows crashing? If it's the former, have you checked MSconfig under Boot tab is not set to Safe Mode. If it's the latter, have you tried stopping start up items and/or non-microsoft services to see if that helps. |

I don't think a repair disk from a different computer will work. There will be a compatibility problem. But I could be wrong. If I said I think your screwed would think I'm a dick?

You should be able to do a Windows 7 repair installation from any retail OEM Windows 7 install disk, or a retail (full or upgrade) Windows 7 installation disk, and use your product key if needed. Obviously, you'll need the proper version - 32- or 64-bit. You'll have to be booted into Windows 7, not in safe mode, for those installation disk options to work. Factory restore/system repair disks won't work.
If you don't have access to an installation disk, my best option would be to check out m@jorg33ks and go to their malware removal section. They've got a detailed set of tasks you can run, and they're pretty good at helping fix bad computers. Good luck. |

To be honest I posted a link to Neosmart who have the recovery CD as a download because OEM's and full retail don't include the repair option. It's totally different to XP, he could also get ERD commander but that's quite advanced but fixes a plethora of problems. |
