Well the thing is, both "The Thing" and "Alien" had slow build-ups before things got truly crazy.

Only with a ten hour show, the build-up becomes more noticeable, I guess?

But it's pretty clear that things will get pretty bonkers by the time the series is done.

Watching episode 4 now.

They were barbarians back then in 1845.

The way the ship's officers handled their crew by using harsh and brutal corporal punishment to instill discipline among the crew, their medical science (more like lack of it), their non-existent hygiene facilities, every thing!!

Those 2 ships were supposed to be the most technologically advanced ships in the Royal Navy at the time (according to their Wiki pages)?

They thought scurvy (lack of vitamin C due to not being able to keep fresh fruit and vegetables on a ship) was contagious.

They would cut up the body of a person who died from scurvy to look for signs of infections and contagion and necrocis in the internal organs and tissues.

I've read the original novel and I am familiar with the actual event this was inspired by.

The show has been slow in building up, and I noticed a few changes from the book, but overall it's staying fairly faithful and a decent effort at historical accuracy.
