For porns...i used Window Media Player or Haihaisoft.

But for "normal" movies i used VLC since it worked good for subtitle file ( .SRT)

Codec...i only use K-Lite Codec Pack, the best.

So I'm trying to live with the fact my computer just can't take those files. The KMPlayer installation file I got from their website, was a nightmare. So many offers coming my way, of course turning them down as I don't need extraneous software, and I believe I pack light in software containment. So while my experience with KMP is short, and one I made it so due to impatience and frustration, I won't compliment it.

So with the limitations mentioned, there still is the question to be answered here. I'm going with Media Player Classic-Home Cinema, with the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. I've found it plays 99% of all video formats, I'm very used to its functions and interface by this point that I don't like to try anything else. I keep VLC though as a backup, as that plays some rather formats with unique encoding. For example, certain MP4 players, and this was years go, but a good example, couldn't play on MPC. So VLC to the rescue. Currently there's one pesky .MOV file where the audio codec, according to MediaInfo (part of the K-Lite installation), does not exist. So no sound in this one video, but VLC plays it just fine. So I stick with those two, with MPC as the primary video player. I've gone with it since 2008, and never dropped it from my list of programs.
My computer is the same way. I have to use AVC to encode some of these videos just to get it to respectable resolutions.

I use the K-Lite Mega Pack with MPC and almost never have had an issue with it. One of the reasons is, on the first of each month, I delete the codec pack off of my laptop and do a clean install of the latest one (which BTW is 9.95, not 9.90). This is something I picked up from a tech board... if you install a new build on top of an old one, you risk conflicts with codecs, and could result in broken codecs. (If you choose to do this, make sure you note what basic presets you have, like other video formats and output filters, so you can double check them after a fresh install.)

This method has worked well thus far for me.

I use MPC Classic.

But I am starting to use Pot Player as it seems to handle HD videos with no codec packs required, and plays them very well!

A while back, Sourceforge mentioned that they were phasing out the "standard" MPC player. Back then, during installation, you had a choice between the "Standard" MPC player and the "Home Cinema" MPC player. So now, the Home Cinema version is the only one available when installing the codec packs, but you can still download the old version (6.4.9.1) as a standalone here. (Be aware that it hasn't been updated in over two years, but should still work just fine.)

Once downloaded, whenever you upgrade your codec pack, you can uncheck the MPCHC box, and simply use your existing MPC.

BTW, version 9.95 was released on 5/31.

I suggest you make your player, its not hard work, you can make it very easy with the .net framework(C# or Visual Basic) or you can make an independent player with C++.(the only thing that you need is a good codec).(Visual Studio is the best tools for it).
