How to avoid DNS censorship

FYI, further to the above, and your mileage may vary .. maybe it helps explain some oddities

1) Google DNS requests are claimed to be stored and analysed by Google (and their friends!), along with originating IP, etc. No real surprise, why else does G provide free services, they're a data collection agency after all
No doubt they are interested in using information from the requests in their own ways too ..

2) in the UK for example, its not just DNS filtering that goes on, but IP blocking too - you need to use some way of 'changing your location', eg. using a VPN or proxy server

Let me introduce you to the ultimate anti-censorship tool that exists: the Tor network.

With it your problems will be solved. It can be a bit slow when compared with the normal surfing or browsing with a VPN or ordinary proxies, but that is not bad at all.

Only use it for surfing, but NOT for uploading and downloading your files, firstly because it is not justified or needed at all, secondly because you would overload the traffic of the Tor network, making it harder to use (for you and others).

But with another DNS server in your settings your internet speed will be the same all the time. That is the advantage over TOR.
But another DNS server is not really for getting anonymous on the net. I admit that.

If your ISP blocks traffic on DNS level, you can try DNSCrypt (http://opendns.com/about/innovations/dnscrypt/).

Or if you're using linux, run following commands as root:

# iptables -t nat -A OUTPUT -p udp --dport 53 -j DNAT --to 208.67.222.222:5353
# iptables -t nat -A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 53 -j DNAT --to 208.67.222.222:5353

It will redirect all DNS lookup from port 53 of your local PC to OpenDNS server (208.67.222.222) on port 5353.

There is a good browser addon I've found called ZenMate.

All you do is install it, then you can select if you want to activate it. Also you can pick your location. Then when you visit a website you bypass any restriction.

Try using the TOR browser: I use it to access websites that are blocked here in the UK.
