The purpose is to avoid flooding.
If you posted, say, 10 or 20 pics in a thread, even if they were thumbnails, you would've probably exceeded the allowed 500kb file-limit.
Same reason why we don't allow GIFs of larger filesizes.
It's all about having the threads loading faster, other than not make the forum crash.

More than that will probably exceed the 500kb filesize limit.

The side-by-side collage one or the redhead one?

If you mean the first, NO. They're not allowed, because some other users, over the years, put 2 different pictures that either represented the theme of the thread partially (in some other thread), or were just 2 different pictures that were simply off.
That's why we don't allow them.
No problem if you post 2 pictures of a collage individually.

As for the redhead pic, YES, that is definitely a redhead woman, to me.
Although, for some, that can be also considered Auburn Red (not redhead enough), she definitely has the connotations of a real redhead woman.
