a couple of thoughts -

people who extol the virtue of 80s-90s porn (and I'm one of them) tend to forget all the gob-smackingly bad porn that was made and is now forgotten. The best of the porn of that time is what's remembered. What's kept me from watching a lot of recent porn is that I don't want to have to go through the learning curve (again).

Also, porn from back-in-the-day was a more hit-or-miss proposition. You rented tapes, not scenes. As such, the renting/buying decision was much more involved than it is today where anybody can get anything and fastforward through it at no cost.

That "looking at the cast list" aspect of porn is gone. I ended up liking Laurie Smith because she was a background player in "I Dream of Ginger" who caught my eye. I found her name in the credits. And, as I rented other movies, I noticed Laurie was in a lot of extremely watchable scenes. she was a second-tier performer who I knew would make a tape rental a "good" one. Same thing with Patricia Kennedy and Nikki Knights. Neither was a top-billed star, but they were almost always in good scenes.

Other performers were more famous but tended to turn in lackluster performances - I'm looking at you Bridget Monet and Chasey Lain - so I'd look for tapes where I knew the costars were good.

By the way, if you want a contemporaneous critical look at classic porn, google - Imperator porn reviews - he had a great rating system and solid comments about the films. You'll find plenty of new things to try after reading his reviews.
