Mr Selfridge is a British period drama television series about Harry Gordon Selfridge and his department store, Selfridge & Co, in London, set from 1908 to 1928. It was co-produced by ITV Studios and Masterpiece/WGBH for broadcast on ITV. The series began broadcasting on ITV on 6 January 2013 and 30 March 2016 on PBS in the United States.

That was a great show that I really enjoyed.

I missed it in 2013, but caught up with it following the 2016 PBS release when it almost instantly found it way on the various pirate streaming sites (which is were I watch most TV shows and feature films these days).

As a Welshman I'm a member of England's first colony. The irony is that we put our oppressor on the throne in 1485 - viz. Henry VII [Henry's father, Edmund Tudor (Welsh spelling Tewdwr), was the half-brother of Henry VI, born of an illicit union between Queen Catherine of Valois, widow of Henry V and Owen Tudor, her Welsh Clerk of the Wardrobe].

So when you start thinking colonies start with Wales. Did you know that it wasn't until the Welsh Language Act of 1967 that a Welsh person could speak their own language in a court of law in their own country? Before that date they had to prove that they couldn't speak English. And the Welsh Not in schools?

My own father's treatment after Dunkirk! This could be an extended rant, especially if I include the burning of effigies of Welsh people which took place in London every 1 March (St David's Day). The Welsh know colonialism and imperialism and were co-opted. Isn't Zulu a glorious film?

i wasn't tryna start anything! i honestly think "UK colonial period" sounds like it means UK being the colony. such as in roman(?) times. after all, we talk abt the "american" colonial period here; not the "UK" one.

Did you know that it wasn't until the Welsh Language Act of 1967 that a Welsh person could speak their own language in a court of law in their own country?

tell me about it! i was in hong kong in 94/5/6 when they first allowed cantonese in the courtrooms! before that the judges and lawyers all spoke english (or occasionally mandarin); if a witness could not manage as well, they submitted testimony ahead of time and the lawyers translated it into english for the "official" version. or something like that.

which might be ok if it were a MAGISTRATE system (judge making decisions), but it wasn't. most cases relied on juries...who could not understand english (or mandarin) any better than the witnesses!

i caught the tail end of one such case on the news. reporter was interviewing one of the jurors about the case. "yeah...i dunno...i didn't really understand what they were talking about...lotta english...then we voted."

just discovered the recent vicar of dibley specials (reviews range from "abomination" to "defund the BBC!"), which got me looking anew for "minister of divine" (yank remake with kirstie alley). most sources agree a pilot was made -- a couple even claim it was aired -- but damn if i can find it.

i disagree with some of the conclusions there. i see no reason a priori why a remake of spaced or OFAH couldn't be good. odds are it wouldn't be, but with the right touch, why not? the office US surprised everyone, and, like the article says -- ALL IN THE FAMILY! best sitcom the US ever had.

OFAH, in particular, seems especially well-suited to us. we ALREADY view half of all new yorkers as fast-talking scam artists -- what's not to work here?

seems a better fit than something dependent upon the customs and subtleties of english village life, say.

speaking of which, watched Maggie Cole. so-so. i liked the initial premise, but then it shifted to 5 eps worth of "apologizing". i think it could have been a lot funnier had she RAMPED UP the gossip-mongering amidst brief bouts of *insincere* apologies.

and the husband -- mark heap -- acts waaaaaaaaaay too much like HUGO (james fleet) to cast opposite her! mannerisms, speech patterns...seemed like a bad case of dejà vu.

speaking of which, i dunno why ppl are so up in arms over those 3 VoD eps. yeah, they're not very funny, but what do u want in an 8-minute PSA/PIF?! ppl were expecting way too much.
