From my experience, I actually remember the total number of viruses & the like I've ever run into from downloading files or even visiting porn sites over 15 years or so-one. But as long as you have anti-virus software and keep it up-to-date, you really have nothing to worry about. And if you run into a problem on one certain site, just don't go back there.

You talking filesharing or bittorrent? When a file is downloaded usually your anti-virus is programmed to scan it automatically or you can manually scan it. I've collected well over 6-7 TB since '95 and never once ran across xxx file w/virus.
You're more likely to hit a virus from a webpage so be careful which webpages you open. (I've found the Eastern European websites are the most suspect with spam and viruses.) I had my entire OS wiped out by a webpage virus once. Make sure your browser has good security. Even image pages (ie. screenshots) over the internet are loaded with popups and spam and will mess with your browser. (Eastern European/Russian screenshot pages are loaded with this stuff.) Never open an .exe file if you are not sure what it is or where it came from. Scan it and/or delete it. Use all the tools you can find: Spywareblaster, Spybot, Anti-virus, Malwarebytes, Hijackthis. Definitely use more than one Spyware software. |

All good advise. You are more likely to get a virus, if there is one, from a bit torrent DL than a file sharing DL as most hosts, probably all, scan their uploads regularly to prevent any mishaps.

Honestly... I've been downloading porn since I had an internet connection and have very rarely came across a file with an imbedded virus. I use Avira free antivirus and nothing else unless I need to remove malware in which case I use Malware bytes. Also keep an eye on the file extension of the file you're grabbing. Usually stay away from .exe files as that is a program that will launch an installer for something you probably don't want. Familiarize yourself with proper file extensions and get a good antivirus program (use only one antivirus, using more is a waste and will slow your PC to a crawl) and you should be fine. Keep in mind a good rule is about 5-10Mb per minute of the video. So if the file name and size doesnt check out, then you may wanna pay extra attention.

I've downloaded thousands of files through PS and have never got a virus.
I think the threats of virus these days is pretty small and exaggerated by companies such as Norton that want to sell you their bloated crap. Stay away from Warez sites, unless you know what you are doing.

If the file extension is not .exe, then it is very unlikely to be a virus. However, it is still possible to embed an .exe within media files, so you should install an antivirus to be sure. If you don't want to buy an antivirus then then download Microsoft Security Essentials. It is free and works pretty well.
