How to play a wmv BBC download after 30 days?
The BBC says that you have 30 days to watch a wmv downloaded from their iPlayer site before they "expire". Does that mean that there is some software attached to the video that prevents you watching it after 30 days? If so, is there any way to override that software?

I havent downloaded from iPlayer as I usually stream and watch on the fly. I just did a check and BBC are using wmv DRM on the files set to expire after 30 days.
All you need is a DRM removal tool that you must use before the 30 days has expired. There are plenty of these available freeware on the net so just search google. The reason you have to use before it expires is because of the encryption key (which will be stored on your PC somewhere (probably linked to your windows media player)). The DRM removal software will require the key in order to process it and without a key the DRM cannot be removed. I have done this many times in the past with downloads from streaming sites (particularly Japanese sites) to ensure that I have the ability to watch when I choose to. Given its a BBC program though you can probably get it from the eztv torrent site as they tend to post all BBC content. |

The info given by the BBC when you attempt a download is:-
"You have up to 30 days to watch any programmes downloaded to your computer before they expire. Remember to delete expired programmes from your computer to free up space." That is defintely DRM protection which would need removal if you wish to continue watching after 30 days. |

I use a mac and there in nothing in the wmv folder but there is a "DRM Plugin.bundle" in the "Internet Plug-Ins" folder which is dated the same time that I installed the wmv, do you think that removing the bundle will enable me watch the video after 30 days without downloading a DRM removal tool? There is no other file on my computer with DRM in it's name. I had previously downloaded the BBC iPlayer and have removed all the files with BBC in the name. I had a quick look on google and most of the DRM removal tools seem to be for iTunes DRM protected M4P files, and not for video. |

The video will still expire in 30 days after download regardless of what files you remove. Its actually done via a remote server system that holds the DRM information. So it works like this.
Your PC downloads from BBC You then try to play the wmv file. Media player recognises the DRM and contacts the DRM server embedded in the file. The DRM server contacts BBC for file info (to find out if BBC have expired the file). If the file is not expired then it connects to your Media player to find out the key. If you have no key the file does not play. If you have a key the file plays. When the key expires it auto deletes. Your movie is then regarded as expired. The DRM information in the video file is located in the header chunk along with the file size info and other video info (codec type, etc). What a video DRM removal tool does is remove the DRM information from the header chunk and recreates this and overwrites just that segment. That makes the file DRM free and playable for as long as you want. I believe that there is software to do this on the mac although I do not have a mac and have not tried this one. Google "Total Media Converter for Mac" and you should find the software. This apparently can remove DRM from WMV on a mac. |

Thanks again for your help Kytestar.
Is icoolsoft a website that you have heard of, as I am always wary of those sort of sites but it takes Paypal so I suppose it should be OK? My choice is a bit restricted because my mac is OS X v 10.4 and is a few years old. Does this sound as if is what I need:- http://icoolsoft.com/total-media-converter-for-mac/ |
