Is there any differance in ethernet cables? I have high speed internet capable of 25mb/s and I was wondering if the quality of the cable makes a differance? Does a more expensive varity make a better connection? Are there ways to improve my speed? Throught Speedtest.net I usually average 23 mb/s, but I want to improve download speeds, especally large HD files.

Short answer: No, not for home use. Basic cat5 cable (ethernet) is good for 100mb/s 4 times faster then your listed Internet connection. Cheap cable is usually just as good as the overpriced stuff.

Long answer: Yes, there are a lot of different versions of ethernet cable with different shielding, and ratings. They are used by network techs for various tasks in data centers, and cabling jobs. Most of these cables are only available in specialty shops like GrayBar, not in consumer electronic stores.

Just get cat5e cable and you will be fine unless the cable is screwed by the person that made it. If you want better cable buy FTP not UTP. Next level is cat6 and that is for 1Gb+ lines

Don't get long cables.. don't let it near other power cables. It usually doesn't make a difference. However, the ones you find at your local dollar store are usually not the same quality as the ones you see inside a PS3 or xbox 360 box. The good ones usually come in blue and they have better build quality on both ends.

Speedtest.net is not always accurate, btw
