Editor for Video
Does anyone make a good video editor software that works similar to Sony Vegas that doesn't cost 600 frickin' dollars? Sony Vegas is so awesome is that I can cut, slow down, add transitions, and do so much without jumping through learning curve hoops that VirtualDub and other make you do. Only think I didn't like about Sony Vegas is that is doesn't open MKV containers and FLV.
I need something that'll work for HD and save to original resolution. If it's 720, then it should save in 720. Plus, I'd prefer a program that'll open as many formats as possible. FLV, M2TS, and all common formats seen online. I know some will take conversion, like MKV, but whatever. How can I cut MKVs without losing anything? I have some HD MKV movies I'd like to extract scenes from, but goddamn, I can't figure out these free programs. That MKVExtract program made no sense to me. I couldn't get it to do shit. |

Sounds like you are using a PC. If you're on the Mac side, I have used several incarnations of iMovie and have found it to be very easy to learn and yields great results. I used iMovie 4 for a project at work in 2006 and it resulted in a very professionally produced instructional program that was circulated to many Home Depot stores as a DVD created with iDVD, another Mac program. One year later just after Thanksgiving, my very grateful employer (read sarcasm) terminated me to be replaced by a North Carolina marketing company.

I actually run Linux for nearly everything, especially Internet. However, when it comes to certain things, I jump over to XP or Windows 7. I have XP on this computer along with Linux and another faster computer with Windows 7, plus a Windows 7 laptop. Kinda ridiculous. Even have an android tablet. Only thing I don't have is a Mac! lol

Titles can be deceiving: Mkvextract won't let you cut your mkv into pieces, but mkvmerge will.
You can either use the mkvmerge GUI or the CLI. In the GUI, just load your video, go to "global", check "enable splitting", and enter your timecodes. Yes, you need to know your timecodes beforehand. For the CLI, I trust you can read the --help. I know of two other freeware to cut mkv files losslessly: Avidemux and Solveigmm AVI splitter + MKV (or the paying version Solveigmm video splitter, which is muuuch better). Finally, about video editors... I have to say iMovie is really impressive, and I wish there was something as simple as that on Windows. But it seems it wouldn't be enough for your purpose anyway. Why don't you get a cracked Vegas, if you like that program so much ? I've tried a few others, but I couldn't recommend any really... |
