A possible reason for your difficulties
Just an idea:
Could it be that in your first attempts to play the .002 file, you somehow managed to associate the .002 extension with VLC Player? Because if you did, that would explain: 1. Why the file name extension disappeared, since a standard Windows installation hides "known" extensions, so you won't see them any longer although they are still present if the file name. 2. Why adding .002 did not work, because the file name would now effectively end in ".002.002", resulting in that any file joining software would refuse to join the three files, since there is no longer a common naming pattern. 3. Why uninstalling VLC Player helped, since that would at the same time remove the association with the .002 extension. If this seems plausible, don't be afraid to try installing VLC Player again. It works fine for most people, myself included, and plays a lot of media formats. Also, you may consider disabling the hiding of known extensions in Windows (this can be done under the second tab in the "Folder Options" dialog in Windows Explorer). This makes it easier to spot these kinds of errors, and at the same time helps you to identify malicious e-mail attachments that try to trick you with double file extensions. |
