"The first step in a fascist movement is the combination under an energetic leader of a number of men who possess more than the average share of leisure, brutality, and stupidity. The next step is to fascinate fools and muzzle the intelligent, by emotional excitement on the one hand and terrorism on the other." - Sir Bertrand Russell

I like the origins of quotatiions, especially those ascribed to celebrities in popular culture.
For instance, according to your favourite search engine ir was guitarist Jerry Garcia who said: Constantly choosing the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil. In fact it was Hannah Arendt, a German historian and philosopher living in the USA who died in 1975. Her full quotation is: In their moral justification, the argument of the lesser evil has played a prominent role. If you are confronted with two evils, the argument runs, it is your duty to opt for the lesser one, whereas it is irresponsible to refuse to choose altogether. Its weakness has always been that those who choose the lesser evil forget quickly that they chose evil. It is from a treatise entitled Personal Responsibility Under Dictatorship Another one that drives me nuts when people use it, grinning in their superiority is Everyone has a plan till they're punched in the mouth Mike Tyson Tyson never said anything that bright. He was told that by his trainer, the legendary Cus D'Amato, but D'Amato was using a bastardisation of the original written by Helmuth Karl Bernhard Graf von Moltke, a Prussian field marshal, chief of staff of the Prussian Army for thirty years, regarded as the creator of a new, more modern method of directing armies in the field and one of the finest military minds of his generation who wrote No plan of operations reaches with any certainty beyond the first encounter with the enemy's main force. in WWII Rommel simplified this to No plan survives contact with the enemy Moltke also wrote War is a necessary part of God's arrangement of the world…Without war the world would deteriorate into materialism. I have been wondering for 20 years if he didn't have a point The big one for me, that has been pissing me off forever is supposedly by American comedian Richard Jeni, hailed as a genius for saying about religious wars You're basically killing each other to see who's got the better imaginary friend. If you search this line you'll find a bunch of atheist websites ascribing this originally to Napoleon Bonaparte, which has been scholarly debunked time and again. In fact, the line was first used in its original form by PLO leader Yasser Arafat who said of the constant conflict between Israel, Palestine and Egypt Going to war over religion is going to war over who has the best INVISIBLE friend Which, if you think about it, means something entirely different and is respectful to all faiths, and to those who believe in nothing.
