Got real lucky and found a stack of dvd's I had recorded clips onto in the early 2000's. Managed to get them to play on VLC but they are in VOB file format and I am struggling to convert to mp4 so I can edit and use. I have tried using VLC for this ( I asked mr google and mr youtube) but with very mixed results. Any suggestions please as there is some nice stuff on these discs?

For my big 2000's collection, Handbrake actually would strip out the DRM most of the time. But there are some rare cases. The higher profile studios are probably more locked down...

For DVDs it won't touch DRM

Folks, it's ok, the "DRM" on DVDs is the Content Scramble System, CSS. It's broken since 1999 and therefore completely irrelevant.

Even at the time, it was seen as a weak and badly implemented cryptographic system. Also, it was never meant to prevent copies of DVDs. It was meant to prevent playback of protected DVDs on unlicensed players. Ever wondered why basically all software media players play any DVD with no questions asked, to the point where the vast majority of people can't even tell anymore if a DVD is protected or not? Look up the history of DeCSS and libdvdcss if you're interested. This is how almost all open source software got their DVD support. Before that, most free and open source software couldn't play protected DVDs because they didn't own the necessary license.

The developers of Handbrake stopped bundling libdvdcss with their software 15 years ago, but still support dynamically loading it from various sources if needed. Depending on your OS and system environment, where, for example, VLC could be installed, it even does it automatically for you so that Handbrake does indeed work with protected DVDs without your interaction. Without it, it's unable to read protected DVDs and you need to add libdvdcss manually.

So, no matter if the DVD is protected or not, Handbrake is one valid choice to convert VOB files. Not sure what your exact problems were, but VLC should work as well, as it also converts videos by integrating ffmpeg, I think.

Depending on how any given DVD was produced and how long the individual scenes are, a single VOB (which is limited to 1024 MB for technical reasons) may include just exactly one scene, or parts of the scene and parts of the scene before or after it in a movie. You'd then need to convert all VOBs that hold a part of your scene and cut them and join the cut parts afterwards.

Or, you use the MKVToolNix suite, or mkvmerge, and join the VOBs into a single file and keep the entire movie, or then cut the scene you want from it before converting it as one piece.

I prefer the latter because you can keep the untouched DVD quality files in a single file, which is more convenient than having several VOBs. These files are also convenient to have as a backup of the DVD, because the actual disks are subjected to degradation, even when not in use.

Not true for purchased DVDs I have tried it today and no good but I am talking about a proper DVD release like Thor, etc I have no idea about porn DVDs as I have never bought one.

If You wanna convert all vob-files from one DVD in one file, use this commands:

ffmpeg -i "concat:VTS_01_1.VOB|VTS_01_2.VOB|VTS_01_3.VOB|VTS_01_4.VOB" -f mpeg -c copy output.mpeg -hide_banner

command must consist all vob-files from your DVD
and then

ffmpeg -i output.mpeg new_file.mp4 -hide_banner

Thanks for all the tips. These are dvd's full of clips and films I transferred 2004-07 by the looks of it. I can't remember which software I used. Hours and hours on each disc. Lots of early Rocco and GGG, a full set of the Al Caporno series and various other treasures and I've just scratched the surface. Has made an old man sentimental for an age of beautiful ladies not covered in tattoos. A golden era for me.

I have been able to play the VOB files with VLC and any I have wanted to transfer onto my PC I have via Handbrake.

Thanks again for the advice. I'll keep working through the 100 or so discs. Any rare stuff I find I'll pop up on other forums on the this wonderful site.
