I currently have a 2TB WD Passport external drive with a wide range of entertainment on it. Can I copy the video files to my computer, reformat the external drive as FAT, and transfer the files back so I can watch the movies and shows on my tv?

Yes, you should be able to do that.

Format the drive as FAT32 and remember that the maximum file size for any single file is 4GB. Copy a few files back to your WD Passport and check that they play okay before adding the rest.

Thanks. I appreciate the info. I don’t think I have any video files over 2gb.

Well, the drive is erased and reformated as FAT32. I can drag & drop video files to it, but when I plug it into the tv there’s no files anywhere.

Is the HD a portable drive? If yes, maybe the usb port is not supplying enough power. Also, are you sure the drive has to be FAT formatted? FAT hasn't been used for a long time and one quick search stated either FAT32, NTFS or ExFAT should be used, but it depends on TV brand. You should also check what file types the TV recognizes.

Yep, portable drive. I just tried it in ExFAT with the same results. I’ll give NTFS a try. I tried playing a couple movies off a thumb drive and that worked ok.

That seems kind of odd to me, as FAT32 is generally supported by basically everything that accepts a removable drive.

What brand of TV is it?
