I can't decide if Retribution is Nexus with masks or a badly copied version of Aces and Eights.

I thought they were a crappy answer to the Dark Order. Wouldn't surprise me if they went around recruiting, oh, that MVP group already got that covered I guess lol. Can't possibly have two groups doing the same thing... I thought Vince had a thing about not showing your face so I'm surprised he's got a group with masks.

Thoughts on clash of champions ppv?
I feel let down that 2 matches didn't take place and show being raw heavy but the ambulance match and the ladder match were highlights. |

Yeah the Ladder between Styles, Hardy, and Zayn was freaking great. The bumps Jeff and Sami took especially was hard to watch. I'm going to need them to run it back in a Cage or Hell in a Cell Match because why not!

I can't imagine WWE booking getting any worse than it is now, but they continue to set new lows. Witness some "IMO" bullet points from recent programming:
- Most of the indie guys marks really want to cheer for (Styles, Nakamura, Cesaro, Roode, Rollins, etc.) are heels. Coincidence? RAW seems awful heel-heavy right now. - RAW Underground? Please. Really? It's no secret Shane is a MMA mark, but what purpose does it serve? This PG version "Fight Club" wannabe looks like Shane getting his rocks off. - Why does RAW suddenly feel like "Keeping Up with the Kardashians", with the Mysterio family being the center of so much programming? Dominik does not, nor will he ever have the "it" factor needed to succeed in the business. The unnecessary focus on yet another underwhelming son of a star (and his family, for that matter) follows in the tradition of (the late) David Flair and Erik Watts, as sons who were pushed way beyond reason and thus never paying their dues. I can't imagine there are a lot of happy people in the RAW locker room about this. His push is probably part of Rey's most recent contract. - I dig the Street Profits, but the remind me too much of Cryme Tyme... can we please have an African-American tag team that doesn't "shuck and jive"? And wasn't the Tyme they given a ton of camera time in their day? And weren't they over? And didn't Vince shit all over them? Vince seems to have this disturbing thing for comedic, self-depreciating blacks (Street Profits, R-Truth...). - Why does the WWE bring NXT wrestlers up to the main roster, but only give them a month to get over before making them jobbers? Keep in mind that The Ascention (anyone remember them?) was the most feared team in NXT history back in the day... they held the NXT Tag Bets for a year, believe it or not... and they lasted about a month in the WWE before they started doing jobs. Hello? Remember when Ricochet was having five-star matches against Will Ospreay? Today, he's a mid-card lackey, doing jobs. What a waste. - For that matter, why is Adam Cole STILL not on the main roster? Who does he have heat with? - I really miss Mauro Ranallo. Fuck Corey Graves. And neither Wade Barrett nor Beth Phoenix do anything for me as color commentators for NXT. - In what universe is Jey Uso half of a singles main event on a pay-per-view? Or two, seeing as how he's apparently going to co-main-event HIAC? Just asking. - Am I the only one who doesn't buy Bray Wyatt's character? He looks like the sort of assembly line, cartoonish heel Jerry Lawler lost the Mid-South title to, back in the day, when he wanted a break from in-ring action... - As far as the WWE RAW women, if you're name isn't Bayley, Banks, or Asuka, you're pretty much fucked, push-wise... - How many times must we be subject to Bobby Lashley versus Apollo Crews? Is this going to end up like The Sheik versus Bobo Brazil, a feud which dominated the old Detroit territory for nearly three decades? It sure feels that way. - I wonder if they paired Nia Jax with Shayna Baszler, just so if/when Nia injures another wrestler, Shayna will just shoot on Nia and beat the fuck out of her for real... - If Zelina Vega can go from manager of a mid-card tag team that nobody cares about to a match for the Women's title in a matter of days, what does that say about WWE writing? How do they connect those dots? Vega has the wrong kind of heat... emotes way too much. She's simply not believable. Just like Vicki Guerrero was... and is once again in AEW. (and why the fuck did they sign her?) - Retribution... worst execution ever. Yes, worse than the NEXUS or the NWO. How many members are there? I've seen spots where there are five, seven, and nearly twenty of them. In their first main attack, instead of acting like Badasses, the natural way anti-authority figures should be portrayed (see DX), a couple of them were jumping up and down post-attack like little kids [probably the females based upon their height and (now revealed) identity]. Plus, a main idea behind and outside attack from a rogue masked group is their relative anonymity. With these new half masks, and confirmed identifications, they look like misguided trick-or-treaters with names matched to the faces. The edginess factor is gone, and now they look like just another faction with little rhyme or reason to their storylines, probably grouped together since creative has nothing for them. - The ambulance match... or... "how not to book a heel". The idea behind booking x-on-one attacks is to build sympathy for the "one", surviving against insurmountable odds... as in "x" number of heels against a single babyface, which is the norm. Now, McIntyre looks incredibly weak, as the Ambulance match was way overbooked, requiring three faces (four if you count Flair, but he drove the Ambulance) to interfere on his behalf. I'm sure the writers meant to give McIntyre the rub from the legends, but instead, they made Orton the sympathetic character by surviving interference from three other people, turning the match into a four-on-one affair, making Orton look heroic in the process, for fighting to the very end. The WCW fucked up this kind of situation with the (Master P) No Limit Soldiers versus the West Texas Rednecks in the late 90's (never mind the Soldiers had no business being in the WCW, but that's another story)... the numbers game favored the faces, and thus made the heels sympathetic characters for persisting despite the odds. This had the audience booing the Soldiers and cheering the Rednecks, which was the opposite of what was supposed to happen. That, and the Rednecks' hilarious "Rap is Crap" song got over with the (older, and largely Southern) WCW audience. The response caused Eric Bischoff to pull the plug on that feud before it ever got going. |

Before fans were excited to see the stars, excited to see what will happen. These days excited to see a match because those involved are good in ring, whatever that truly means. It's like the wrestlers are auditioning to us or something along those lines. It's weird.
IMHO it's the only reason anybody watches New Japan. I don't know why I still watch any of this anymore. As it goes, old habits die hard. AEW has Jericho, Moxley, MJF, Page and Omega who I enjoy, among a few others. They haven't totally become like WWE yet, even though it's gotten close. I still have optimism for now. Still I wouldn't classify as must see. I always thought I'd stop watching WWE after Taker retired and that's what I've done. They've screwed us over enough over the years. I've joined the Rumble and Mania only viewers lol. I keep up on it via podcasts out of habit. NXT made me stop watching when they slipped up with Rhea. She looked like a star at the end of last year and then brought her back down to just another roster member. I've come back to it a good few times but I just don't really care anymore. HHH is also a bs liar so I'm not supporting that. I've been giving Impact a chance but after a few months feels like any other wrestling show today. So formulaic. They had a fresh coat but it's starting to stale up. The Good Brothers (Gallows & Anderson) are lame on their own. Not enjoying them at all. Thankfully RVD and his whacko gf have finally left. |
