Had one of those "updates" yesterday, and now my downloads file crashes instead of opens.

I remember from long ago, there is a way to allow a file to be larger, but I don't remember how to go into the controls.

Provided I can get a file window to stay open, how do I change that?

I've rebooted twice, trying to get file explorer to hold, but will only open to quick access, not downloads file.

I can, however, access thumb drives, so looks like reruns until I can fix this.

Nah, my anti virus doesn't let me use 'em.

I can access subfolders. I am transferring files out of them onto thumb drives, but no luck opening the downloaded folder yet.

Have you tried command line?

Perhaps you can move them to an accessible folder that way?
Then you should restart, boot into command line and run CHKDSK.

Have you tried using an alternative file explorer? Such as: Free Commander or Explorer++?
