Default CD/DVD reader does not acknowledge disc

Every now and then I experience a strange glitch where my audio does not work in any player. That being said, rebooting usually fixes the issue, if not the first time, then on a second try.

However, I have rebooted twice since I discovered this issue last week. My disc reader is not recognizing anything I put in it. That makes it difficult to add the thirty or so new (to me) cds I have purchased into ITunes.

Any of you guys or girls know a control panel, toggle, setting adjustment, trouble shooting, trick I can use to get this tower some glasses?

Before Windows 10, anything I did not know the location wouldn't take me very long to find it. Now solutions are evading me.

Thanks in advance.

Could be an issue with the drive not actually reading discs.
Is it old, has it ever had any cleaning done to it?

Two thoughts here:

1) disc recognition is a function of the drive itself. Not Windows, drivers, or software. If a drive isn't recognize a disc is inserted, it's typically a faulty drive.

2) There is known issues with Win10 and drive recognition (not disc recognition). If the drive is listed in Device Manager, then this the issue noted above. If the drive isn't even being listed in Device Manager, then it's a Win10 issue.

The drive is probably faulty! I had that happen to me with a laptop drive, which is why I have a external CD/DVD writer for writing discs.

You know, I didn't even think about writing to disc. That might give me more of an idea of what is going on.

My Mac doesn't have a CD/DVD drive, so I have been using one of the cheap units you mention.

The one I have is about 3 years old, and works fine. The day it stops working I'll simply replace it with another cheap unit.

I far prefer separate components in both hi-fi and computers and when I next upgrade my TV set-up, I will be going for separates too (display unit, tuner, and sound)...

Hi-Fi, I heartilly agree with, though I cannot for the life of work out what's causing the strange noise in one of my speakers.

Computers, I don't worry so much, unless you have an all-in-one or a laptop, most part can be replaced relatively easily.
