I've downloaded many movie files & made DVDs & then deleted them. I've had a few that wont delete. They get the document area to say ~ "Not Responding" and then it all goes off.

I check it with the anti-virus & it says it's OK.

I played it on VLC player after I made a video & VLC player will not shut off ~ no matter What I try ~ and they have a lot there.

I tried to change the name of this file to "0" & then delete it ~ it wouldn't go.

I finally shut down the whole computer & when I came back I could delete it.

WTF?

I know this is a stupid question OldBoots but have you restarted your computer. If a file is in use, it won't delete. Just make sure that any program you have loaded it in has closed and is not currently using the file.

If the file won't get deleted after you restart your computer, make sure to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Hit the F8 key at startup and select Boot Windows In Safe Mode.

I'm using windows10. Usually when a program is being used by another program it lets you know ~ I see it all the time when I try to delete a file that is still in a video converter I use. This file wasn't in anything. I also copied it to documents (which it was already in) and it made a copy but there was nothing there but the name and the word copy after it. I checked the details ~ absolutely nothing. How can this even happen?

I said I scanned it with anti-virus and it said it was OK. But I couldn't delete it, I couldn't change its name and I couldn't move it to another folder. I was just wondering what was in this file to make it behave this way.

I also first made a DVD from it which plays fine.

Sometimes the video player's history maintains the status of the file or files if you loaded multiple files as being used even when you close the video player. Try to load another file and then delete the file you could not delete. This has been an issue on Windows since Windows98.

It may have had funny characters in the name eg. I was copied a file over from unix with a colon(: ) in the name ... windows did not like that!

Personally, I use good old Process Explorer, formerly by Sinsinternals, now under Microsoft's hood,

Once the program is ran, control-F, type the name of your file that you cannot delete, or at least a part of the name, and you will find which program or system element hooked itself onto it, and you will know which one to close, so that control over that file is released.

The advantage of Process Explorer, in my eyes, is that it tells you who kept a claim on accessing your file. It helps discovering when a program doesn't work right, or understand that programs have weird idiosyncrasies the user must bear with.
