Most routers are set on a channel "out of the box", usually channel 6, from my experience (I think 1, 6, and 11 are the general defaults). Go to Google Play (or app store of your choice) and get a WiFi Analyzer. It should show you the available channels and how much traffic is on each.
Find a channel with little or no traffic, go into your router's settings and change the channel. The principle is akin to that of lanes on a highway.

i assume "go into your router's settings" there is a typo, since, once again, I DO NOT HAVE A ROUTER.
but the rest of your post makes sense. i shall see if i can switch w/e channel the PC is seeking out on the receiving end here. HOWEVER...why all this traffic on various channels to begin with? i mean, it's just the landlord and me. no wait -- it's not even the landlord. landlord using hardwired cable for own access. just plugged in router/wifi for *my* emergency benefit. so i guess i shouldn't be making comparisons ("...uses zoom, etc") betw his speeds and mine. you do realize with whats going on the world ALOT more people are online at different times and speeds right? i also live in an apartment complex and just on my floor alone lets say we have 11 apartments, 10 of us use a laptop, what do you think happens when that many networks are that close together? DIFFERENT SPEEDS, im not sure if you use Comcast(xfinity) but i do and at night its expected for speeds to dip a bit, esp if im walking around rooms or around the area such as a local coffee shop or just outside on a bench, everything is affected right now, the above post is 100% correct, change what channel your on, think of it as a cell phone, if your in a crowded building and cant hear anything or have bad service you walk outside so the signal opens, this is basically the same thing, but if you have a laptop, YOU DO have a router, you need something to give you the internet, just like you would have a modem a router is what finds the available coverage and network in your area which again, is how your able right now to access this website and yes downloading anything will make your speeds also drop.

wow. i guess i'm really misunderstanding things. i thought the router was the thing in the landlord's apt PUTTING OUT the signal?
i don't have one myself. nor do i have physical access to the one he has. what i DO have is his mercy signal drifting into my apt, and claiming to be 72Mbps. while getmyspeed tells me reality is between 1-7Mbps. but again, 3 ppl have now insisted router is on my receiving end. pls clarify how so! Okay... if I'm reading correctly, you have no router, but you're just getting your internet through his router (via wireless signal)? Two things... one, the 72mbps is a label of max speed capable, not necessarily what you'll get. Two, if this is the case, you are at your landlord's mercy... stuck in the slow lane, and no way to pass him, using our highway scenario. And when your landlord uses video chat or conferencing, or otherwise streams video, yes, that pretty much screws over anyone else sharing that signal. Video eats up a lot of bandwidth.

Arent you more concerned that your landlords controlling how much or fast internet you have? may i ask why he is? you should have your own equipment, him using his laptop in his apartment should have NOTHING, to do with yours, at all. Is he stealing his tenants Wifi? When you got your apartment and someone came in and actually gave you your internet, phone tv etc they should have PSYCHICALLY handed you someway that YOU get the internet, aka, a modem, a router, cable wires, etc, your landlord using his internet should have NOTHING to do with yours your speed or anything else.

and the above post is right, if your landlord does stuff that takes alot of internet and speed like download a video, watch a movie or something your internet will be at a standstill. You said he had a hardwired internet? so im assuming, he has a modem, like i do, its a black device thats about 2 feet tall that says Xfinity and has a series of dots that are blinking 24/7 that tells me i have an internet connection, which again him having that would have NO AFFECT on you, its a separate apartment separate account, if you use Comcast or Verizon or whoever they would bill you and him separate and you would both have your own internet. Its not like ' you cant go online unless he is' the only way that may work is you had your cable spliced, like watching TV illegally using his setup, but i really dont even think thats possible these days without someone finding out since everything is HD now makes it harder to actually do that

aw, cmon, pls READ the thread!
no one "physically came in" and gave me internet, phone** OR a tv -- i do not HAVE any of those! (somewhat by choice) what i have is a wifi-capable laptop which i take to sbux or mcds or the public libes once or twice a week. amid current lockdown, however, that all went bust. after seeing my abject DESPERATION for over a month (couldn't access bank, couldn't contact employer, couldn't even file for ferkin stimulus check), landlord -- in a rare bout of PITY -- plugged in his router and gave me a PW. "mercy wifi", as i said. so if anything here, it is I who am stealing HIS wifi. sorta. all clear now? ----- ** i *did* have a phone until recently. but after dialup phased out (jan 2019), i rly see no need for that anymore.
