wifi slow as molasses
just HOW MUCH does distance from router and intervening WALLS affect wifi?
i am 3 rooms away from the router, but my connection popup ("status") reads 72Mbps. this is pretty much what i am used to in sbux, the public library, etc., but the reality is that downloads run like 1/20 as fast! i tried speedtest and got DL 0.26 Mbps and UL 5.68 Mbps. ouch! that's not much better than dialup!! (also "ping 14ms" altho i don't quite know how that rates.) thing is, if it really IS that slow, why doesn't status reflect that? does it not clock the speed, but rather READ some nominal speed put out by the router? that is, router is claiming 72Mbps -- and it displays that for me -- when in fact it's more like 7Mbps by the time it gets to me? anything i can do? the 2 locations in question are pretty much immovable. |

Get a Wi-fi Booster. They plug into any available outlet and should solve your problem. It worked for me.

Also, I would wonder...
- is anyone bogarting your WiFi? Are you the only one using it? - what kind of material is between you and the router? - is the router at high in the room as it can be? - are you using a "clean" channel? Phone apps can analyze who is on what WiFi channel, allowing you to pick one with the lowest traffic.

It only works if the router is plugged in to a power outlet directly linked to yours: not any good if you are mooching from a neighbour.

so the second one there (zero33) just gives my PC a better antenna, whereas the first one (alexora) directs the signal thru the house wiring somehow?
i know that was to be the next big "thing", but i didn't realize it had become reality. so i assume it has to be plugged IN to the router somehow? whereas the second one i can use on my own end w/o the neighbour's further involvement? |

Signal strength should give you an idea of what speed to expect.
The fact that your UL is faster than the DL would seem to indicate that this isn't a signal issue. More likely it's a traffic related issue or router configuration. |

what is your routers/modems wifi mode is at ? 802.11 b/g/n (2.4) or ac (5ghz) ? If your pc supports try to switch 802.11 n mode from your router too..It will help a lot..So if you seem connected at 72mbps then if you can switch it will increase to 144 mpbs and after 3 walls you can get for example 10% of it which makes a lot better.. If you can send the modem router settings screenshot from your pc also send the wifi card of your laptop so that we can understand ?

You didn't say if you carry the laptop out of the room what type of speeds you get. That would tell us more. It could be the setup but what you get for speeds near the router would help answer that.
OddBa11's comments were right on point and your upload would drop with your download speed. Don't forget that walls are not the biggest issue. Wires, cables and especially mirrors are big problems. Are the walls normal or were the rooms in question added on. If you are getting full signal strength at the router then you know it is something in between. If you are on getting something better like 10 Mps then you have equipment or setup problems or someone else is using all your bandwith. |

i don't know what kind of speeds they're getting at the router, since i don't have access to it. i know that the landlord uses zoom, etc, whereas i can barely access text pages.
i dunno abt wires, cables, etc in the walls. just normal apt setup. no mirrors betw us afaict. i need to ponder the comments about UL/DL ratios. in the meantime, i just gave getmyspeed another shot: ping 44 ms jitter 519 ms DL 0.0 Mbps UL 1.7 Mbps 0.0! perfect score!! (a bit confusing, since i AM downloading stuff atm...super slow, but not zero....) |
